VW Passat Highline 2.0 TDi CR

Going to look a VW Passat Highline 2.0 TDi CR at the weekend with a view to buying. It's a 6 speed 140 bhp CR Highline model with FSH. Milage a little on the high side at 122k but the timing belt has just been done which is a plus.

What are the watchouts on these models? I believe the CR engine didn't suffer from oil pump failure like the PD units and that the electronic handbrake trouble was sorted in the later Passat B6 models. Is it a case of the usual check when buying a diesel car? DMF, clutch, DPF etc.

    The car is this one:http://www.usedcarsni.com/2009-Volkswagen-Passat-HIGHLINE-TDI-153897892

Engines are grand, no real issues. A/C pump can fail though - very common on 09 models.

Is it that much cheaper than an Irish car? The UK Highline's have terrible aftermarket leather - you can see it puckering in the pictures. They have the Comfortline seats in them and the leather just doesn't go well over them.

Irish Highline's have the Leather Sports seats, which are one of the best seats in it's class. Advert is saying is has climate control, but I'm not sure if it is Climate or just A/C. Might be climate on UK Highlines, but their SE definitely had just A/C as opposed to Irish Comfortlines that had Climate.

The seats are nicer on the Irish highlines but I've yet to find a one in my budget of 9k that isn't a UK import.

I sold an immaculate 1 owner Irish '08 Highline Monte Carlo spec with 88,000 miles and a full history last week for €9200

Albeit, was a 1.9 TDi not a 2.0 and a year older but surely you could find an Irish '09 car?

I would also be of the opinion that those seats are rank :(

I'd rather have the more powerful and more refined engine than the nicer seats. Back to my original question, other than the seats are there any watchouts/tests that I should be concerned with when viewing the car?

There were very few Passat's sold in 09. B6 was in run out and VW Ireland underestimated what would be needed. There were a good few CC's sold though as they could be ordered. That's why most of the 09 Passats are UK imports.

1.9Tdi had been replaced by the 2.0Tdi 110ps CR engine by early 09, so most should be CR. 110ps wasn't bad - bit lacking at higher speed and only 5 gears, but quieter and a larger power band than the 1.9Tdi.

Knocking noise at idle means Fly Wheel is on it's way out.
    Make sure Electric Handbrake works
Make sure Climate Control blows cold

All niggly issues with the 05/06 Passat's had been well ironed out by 08/09 and they were pretty reliable.

It's actually a 140ps engine in that car. Any particular issues with those?

Going to view this tonight. Has the nicer Irish seats. Mileage a little high but the T/Belt kit was done recently and I've been assured by the owner that the car has been well serviced.

    https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/vw-passat-2-0-tdi-bluemotion-quick-sale/11579692

Again are there any mechanical watchouts I need to have in mind?

All the usual stuff and again, make sure the handbrake system is working correctly.

Possibly double check the clutch as I see it has a towbar so could have been under strain

    -edit-
If it's Irish it should be KMs but milage is in miles? Strange one

As said before DMF is something to look out for in a car with that mileage.

IMO The DSG gearbox better suits that 2.0tdi engine than the manual.

Asked about the towbar over the phone. Only ever used with car trailer loaded with timber block for firewood. Think donedeal converts km's to miles on the ad. The corresponding adverts.ie ad lists the km's and they tally with the miles on the donedeal ad. I'm not that fussed anyway as I'll do a proper cartell/motorcheck report if I decide to buy.

How should I check the clutch. Listen for rattling at the biting point? Rattling/vibration at the biting point may mean DMF trouble?

Buddy who has an 06 passat is coming with me. He knows many of the faults so hopefully his input will be useful.

Make sure the electric parking brake is working ok. Common issue on early models of that Passat.

Handbrake worked fine. Stopped it on a small hill, it held it ok, and I pulled off as if it had no handbrake and it released fine. Was able to take it off by pressing the brake pedal and pushing the button too so no issues there. Interior very clean with all working. Only issue on of the small vents poitning into the rear seats was broken but nothing major. Boot was bone dry, the seals around the boot can leak on these but no issues there. No signs of accident damage, body very straight just a few stone chips etc. Tyres about half worn no issues, alloys very clean. No rattle from clutch, gearbox very smooth. Engine had a major service recently and TB done 50,000km ago so life left in the that. Oil level fine, no gunk on filler cap and engine pulled well. Braked in a straight line and stopped quickly. All window worked fine, all interior lights good, all exterior light working. Cruise control working, no warning lights, engine quite and smooth on the road. Mechanically couldn't find fault.

2 things, needs a damn good wash and need new gas struts for the boot lid. He had the struts and said he'd give them to me for nothing. Motorocheck.ie came back with no issues so I went ahead with purchase. Hopefully all goes well.

Donedeal doesnt change KMs to miles and the NCT disc also says miles

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,122 ✭✭✭almostover

To be honest I'm sure there's no issues. The motorcheck history tallied with the NCT number on the disc and the cert and the chassis number matched the engine number. The car appears a little fresher than the mileage so I'm not worried. One thing I did notice was some very light smoke coming from the oil filler cap if you opened it while the engine was running. My buddy said his does this too and it's nothing to worry about just the way that the crankcase breathes. I haven't paid in full for the car yet, could this be worn valve seats or is it just crankcase breathing. I checked my current car and there is a little smoke too and it uses no oil so I presume I'm safe. Can any VAG expert verify this?
