Upgrading an Old Well

    Hi Lads,

We bought a house a year ago with a private well.

The well is inside in a pump house and is built up with a couple of bricks above the floor and capped with slates. There is a very small hole with a rope going into it which is tied on to the wall of the pump house. I don't like this as there is a chance for mice etc. to get in to it potentially.

I want to knock the pump house and build a new garage but this will mean the well will now be outside.

Is it straight forward enough to upgrade the existing well so that is a) better sealed than it is now and b) suitable to be outside?

Could you build up 2 or 3 lines of block in a square and get a proper manhole cover like the councils would have? That what we have at home and never had any problems. Sealed up perfectly. Not sure on cost but should be a lifetime job

+ 1 This is the way to go. You can also get a Rubber Well Cap which will keep anything from falling in to the Well.
I'd also put a coat of Cement plaster coat over the Blockwork. This will also help to keep the Well area dry and Creepy crawlers out.
