I've recently started using the Messages app on my Mac but find it annoying that messages I get on my phone aren't either marked as read or deleted as the case my be when i use the Mac.

What setting do I have wrong here? How do I keep the messages up to date with what it is on my phone?

Marked as read syncing works for me. I don't think Apple implemented syncing for deleted messages yet.

Thanks. Probably staring me right in the face but how do I set that up?

It should work automatically. If it isn't maybe try logging out and back in to iMessage. Also make sure that all the send/receive addresses in settings are active and correct.
