So I was in an accident today and didn't know what to do after it?
I was in the bike lane going through a junction when a driver decided to turn left at the last minute. Now I ran into the van and ended up on the ground. A bit shaken but managed to get up and walk it off. Driver stopped immediately and offered me a lift home etc. We checked the bike was still working and it was he apoligised more than once and I said everything ok and to move on.

Question is should I have took his details etc?
    What would you have done?

Absolutely, take his reg. You are probably in shock or an injury could manifest itself after you parted company. There could be damage to your bike that might not be apparent from the off. So definitely take his reg.

You crashed into the van or the van turned across you?

I was thinking I should of took the reg. Anyway will know if it ever happens again. He turned across me be luckily I was slightly back from him that he was turning into me and managed to brake a bit before we hit

Also report it to the Gardai, you don't necessarily need to make a complaint but you will want it on record in case you do discover an injury or damage after the fact.

I had the same thing happen to me involving a car instead of a van. I took the driver's details and the next day my rear derailleur hanger broke. It was a brand new bike so it was definitely due to the accident. The driver paid for the damage.

I should have reported it to the Gardaí though, as jjpep said. In case I was unknowingly injured or in case the driver refused to pay. But certainly take their details at the very least. Even if it seems unnecessary.

Someone opened their door recently on one of my mates. He slammed full force into it. Like you, he got up and walked it off, didn't take yer man's details. A couple of days later he was in agony......went to the hospital and was told his arm was fractured.
