So I had a tip in my car awhile by a sweet old lady ..its an e92 320d coupe (2007).
Basically the front bumper is gone, side bumper drivers side is gone and the xenon drivers light is cracked and scratched.
She admitted liability straightaway and offered me a cheque :)
Told her to hold off till I contacted my garage for a quote and took her name and address. From a bank statement so no issues with names etc.
I also had photos of her insurance, nct and tax discs as well as mobile and house phone numbers.
I'm inclined to think replacing all 3 will be around the 1200 mark at least so wanted to protect myself in case her story changes. I doubt it but no harm in being safe.
What do I need to do next?

You report it to your insurer as an incident for record purposes
You get an estimate for repairs
You present it to the 3rd party and if there is ANY hesitation in payment, ring her insurer

Get a quote to start with anyway, my guess is that she'll be in shock with what you come back with, and then go via insurance.

    Report it to the Gardai.

If you've exchanged insurance info and gone on your way (which you obviously have) the gardai won't want to know.

Ring your insurance company and let them know, so its on record should you have to pursue further

Get the quote first, it could be €2k plus if there's a new bumper, new headlight, new fittings behind the bumpers, full respray of damaged area etc etc, the parts bill alone could approach a grand. Some people will be cash on the hip when they hit you but when they get the real world bill they will try to walk away. You should say to her if she wants you will get a quote from 2 places of your choice and she can then get another, that way you have 3 quotes so a fair price should be visible.

€1200? You could be trebling that if they all have to be replaced.

They don't have to respond to a non injury crash but you have to report a crash to the Gardai.

Be that as it may, from personal experience, the have no interest in non injury crashes.

I reported a crash I was involved in, the garda I spoke to took no details, not my name, address, nothing. He literally just said 'grand' when I told him what had happened

If nobody was hurt then it's a civil matter, the garda will just get pissed off if you even call them.

No way on earth that's getting fixed for €1200 or anywhere near that figure. I'm afraid it's gonna be a 3k bill at least IMO.

What happens in these situations if the person who caused the accident tries to shift the blame after details have been exchanged
(assuming there is no witnesses or video evidence)?

The insurers will usually argue it out and try to come to the most logical conclusion which in some cases might not reflect what actually happened.

Happened to me, I went back to the cards station, explained that I reported the accident the day before, now the guy who hit me was threatening to not accept liability, they told me it was nothing to do with them.

Called both insurance companies, and his company said not to worry, they would be accepting liability and covering the repair costs.

I'm still not sure why, but I think it may have had something to do with the guy not contacting and informing his insurance co., first they heard of it was from me
