they are custom made, mild steel pipe flattened at each end and then covered in plastic.

Galvanised pipe inserted into holes in the timber would work either, you could fix a strip of Alu underneath if you were concerned about timber splitting.
Position of yellow handles curious unless for vertical handstands:)
