Medical insurance required for Brazilian mother-in-law visit?

    Looking for some advice here.

My Brazilian mother-in-law is planning to come and visit us in June, and had planned to stay with us for 3 months. She had been here last November for 3 months as well and back in 2013 for the same duration.

Seeing as she had been here in November, we contacted an immigration Garda to check if there was any limitation on how long she could visit for in a 1 year period.

The Garda said there was no limitation, but that she would need medical cover in case she got ill while she was here, and to avoid becoming a drain on the Irish public health system. She is 67 years old and in good health. My wife is Brazilian but is a full Irish citizen, if that makes any difference.

Apparently she would have needed this medical cover for all her previous trips as well, but no one in immigration at the airport has raised this for any other previous trips here.

Does anyone know if this is much of a issue? She is worrying a lot about this and is even thinking about cancelling her trip.

Or can anyone advise on what medial cover options she could get? E.g. Would travel insurance be sufficient?

She should be purchasing travel insurance which includes health cover for herself from her home country. As should pretty much everyone who is going travelling anywhere.

as above... Irish insurers won't cover someone who's not resident here. She should be able to buy insurance in Brazil. Whether any of her family has citizenship here unfortunately makes no difference to that.

well, as an EU citizen travelling in the EU you can manage just fine with the EHIC and if anything its better than travel insurance as often you just give your details and the payment is done by your government.
With private insurance you normally need to pay on the spot and then claim (fight) with your insurance company for reimbursement.

I've seen people get hassle free treatment in Germany, Luxemmbourg, France, Austria, Hungary (abeit hospitals are far from swish), Slovakia and on a visit back home in Ireland I flashed my german EHIC and got free GP care and even 50c prescriptions! The EHIC is a fantasic thing, in Europe.
