Some Construction Management career advice sought.

Hey all,

I'm looking to get some advice regarding Construction Management career progression and opinions on which academic resources/books/courses and etc help develop an efficient and effective Construction Manager.

To briefly summerise my background: I qualified as a Carpenter in the year 2000 and spent the following decade working as the owner/operator of a small to medium sized carpentry sub-contracting firm. I took a career break of sorts in 2010 and spent the following five years in university obtaining a BSc and MSc in a non-construction related scientific discipline. I did quite well academically but ultimately the break from construction made me relies that construction is my passion.

The above experiences has culminated in me landing a job the UK as a Finishing Manager with a Tier 1 main contractor/developer on a very large volume high rise/high end development in London.

I am confident in my ability to ensure quality control is achieved and maintained and on-site management of sub-contractors; however I would like to increase my knowledge of industry standard practices in the administration of very large scale construction projects (The project consists of over 3000 units in total).

The Project Director is of the opinion that having this particular Project on my CV trumps having any diploma in Construction Management besides I have a BSc and MSc.
Regardless I still want to develop my CM specific knowledge.

Can anyone critique these books or suggest others?

I have no specific advice but I just want to say fair play. Great to see people like yourself who work their way up through the ranks and deserve the big roles. I wish you all the best.

The only advice I can offer is keep well ordered derail written notes/records. Even if they're only for your own use. .... But I'm pretty sure you already knew that after the MSc!!!
