Remove old stain from floorboards

Hi, I am thinking of removing old stain from floorboards and re staining/varnishing. The floor seems to be in OK condition as was protected by horrible carpet for decades.

I'd rather not sand because it looks messy and most of the floor area would be covered by a rug anyway. Is there any product that would help. I tried a bit of sugar soap and it seemed to work well so I want thinking to continue scrubbing with this but I heard white spirit might be an option?

Thanks in advance for any advice.
