That's just asking for people to mess with your bike. I'd probably try and flip it around to fit my bike in if there was no other spots.

EDIT: Just saw the rear lock...

Ingenious viral marketing from Kona there ;)

Just slide it up over the back so the spaces are available to others.

    Wow, I'd be pretty annoyed

Must've expected it to be photographed too; drive side out, in the big ring, crank at (close to) 0°. If it wasn't for the lock on the back wheel I'd have thought the OP was involved in gussying it up... :pac:

Maybe the guy who owns the bike also owns the whole rack, and he's p*ssed at everyone else locking their bikes to his rack. Anyone think of that, huh?

You'd be tempted to go buy a cheap u-lock and lock it to the rack again.

Several posts in and nobody has said anything about the racks themselves. I'll be the first so. I bloody hate those kind of racks. Commonly provided when organisations have to satisfy the cycling facilities provision required of them without any regard for security nor practicality.

So yeah, i'm not a fan of using these racks at all.

That said, the owner of the bike in question is an inconsiderate knob.

One of the advantages of security skewers is that I finally can use those stupid racks as intended and feel I'll come back and find my bike.

    They're everywhere:

Is the u-lock on the left just locking the back wheel - can't see the frame being enclosed?

Couldn't agree more! Horrible things. Seen more wheels buckled by them then I can remember.

Easy enough to sort out though. Take off the rear wheel and turn frame and front wheel to the 'correct' orientation.

If I end up having to use one of those racks, I put the bike between two slots and lock properly to the higher slot.

They have them in the bike cage in my old office building. There was a race in the mornings in order to get the spot against the cage itself so your bike was out of the way from all the others. Otherwise you'd look for another set of decent bikes and try get between them. I've seen people either lean against a neighbouring bike when unlocking their own, or just shoving them out of the way so they could get easier access to their own. They can be a nightmare.

Same here, never put the wheel into them, just roll the bike alongside it and you can usually get the U lock through the back wheel and frame and the secondary lock to the front wheel.

+1, in the other thread I was saying its begging to be vandalised. Like bikes locked to poles that fell down get stamped on. I always pick up fallen down bikes.

Not condoning the position of the bike, but what do people think the most effective way would be to lock it with those locks (in that position)? without taking wheels off?

The back lock could have gone through the frame. The front lock could have gone through 2 bars of the rack, the back possibly too. I would have had which ever the weaker U lock is on the front wheel. The cable could have been looped through itself on the front wheel and possibly reached the back U lock.

Many do not seem to pay much attention to the weakness of the pole they have locked it to.

Swiped from myself in the stolen bikes thread:

Those style of 'wheel bender' racks are a curse. Particularly the setup in the photo where the rack is too close to the wall behind it. The style of locking could be a protest about how rubbish the rack is. Maybe I'm being too generous here.

I'd like to think that the baddies aren't going to notice the badly locked bike without the note... but they are. I spot them, and I'm certainly not looking for them. If this bike was stolen the owner would probably stare blankly at the lock still tied to the post and be baffled as to how the thief took the bike away.

True. In Ireland, you can't even be sure that "lad" doesn't mean a girl or woman. (At least if the person speaking is from Clare.)

I locked my bike in town just off the top of Grafton St when going for a few jars. I locked the top tube to a pole. Ended up leaving it for a few days.

I was pleasantly surprised to find it still there, wheels on and in the same condition I left it in, but when I unlocked it I couldn't move it. Some funny people had lifted the bike up to the top of the pole (about ten feet or more) and "skewered" the frame over the pole. It took me quite while to work out wtf.

I had to borrow a car, put a step ladder in the boot, grab a mate to help me. Eventually got the bike back, lots of odd looks from passers by.

That's exaclty it. Great clip. I was totally flummoxed and would have been a lamb tot he slaughter if Mike was there. I had been on the beer a few days and was wrecked and had a bit of the fear, was checking for cameras as I considered my predicament!!
