Arcade cab with Origional XBox to PC Monitor

Hi I have an original XBox modded with MAME etc on it. I have the old arcade joysticks and it all works great for emulators. I want to build an arcade cab for it but would prefer to use an LCD monitor rather than a TV, the cab would need to be over 2 foot deep to house my old TV. I have a cable for the xbox that is a 21 pin euro scart on the end. Any suggestions on how to separate the sound to external speakers and video to VGA or DVI.
I want to have a couple of cabs one proper with mame using a jpac and PC and just think if I build this right it might find a new lease of life for the old xbox.

I know a 21" lcd Tv might be the best option but I have a good few monitors and dont really want to spend money.

I suppose you could use one of these
    link
It's a scart to vga adapter but, you'd have to use another cable to break out the audio.
Better to use an Xbox component AV cable like this
original xbox component cable about €7 posted
    And one of these
    Component to VGA adapter
component to VGA adapter plug, about €2.31 posted from HK

This should give you video on your monitor and leave the audio cables free for your speakers.
I'd research it fully before committing money but I don't see a problem.

There is a user here, Last Bandit who produces interfaces that will allow the use of common consoles with arcade cabinets.
If you get the appropriate one for the Xbox, it would be awesome to install the thing into a proper cab, they come up on Adverts and in the A&R Marketplace for reasonable money, a fixerupper for about €200 or so, including a monitor and controls, with the adapter doing all the heavy lifting in terms of making it all work together, very nice devices indeed.

cheers for that, what I have are a pair of these that I picked up years ago and as I started building my first cab at the weekend I figured it might be a good home for the first cab to avoid it ending on the "mame of shame" so I can have an excuse for a practice run.

I would move on from those sticks tbh
Especially if you have a cab in mind.
It's cheap and educational to build your own arcade controls, and they'll be fair more robust and satisfying to use.
Tons of help out there to assist with their construction too.

you'll have to get a sync on green monitor for the component cable and rca to vga connector to work, or you will have to make a cable with an lm1881 sync separator and flash a vga bios to your tsop or use a frosty boot disk to get the xbox to output vga. Also it'll have to be a 1 to 1.5 version xbox as 1.6 won't output vga

Might be cheaper just to get a lovely little Sony 14" or 21" trini CRT instead, cut out all the adaptor nonsense and get an RGB cable, can't get a better image than that, and it'd be worth the extra depth for the colour festival that would go all carnival on your retinas!

Cheers for the info, I have decided to dump the xbox idea and go ahead with a PC plan. Here is where I am at,

    IMAG1152.jpg

I am going to paint black for the moment as I haven't decided on what finish I would like.
I might not bother with a light behind the marquee right away but will not glue the board on in case I revisit that.
I am thinking of getting some carbon fibre vinyl wrap for the joystick, like this , has anyone used that type for their joysticks ?

Looks great, good progress, you could use 12v LED strip for the marquee which is cheaper.

Also i havent used that kind of wrap for joysticks, only sideart and control panels.
Would it stay on with constant use?

Cheers I see a 12v lamp on Amazon for cheap enough, might just do the job, I have to order Castors this week so could be worth it to get the order over the free shipping threshold,
Another thing is I dont have access to a router so T Moulding is out for the moment. I see this car trim moulding also on amazon, it might do the job , any opinions ?

The car trim might work, generally its T-molding though in the shape of a T (you guessed it). You would need a slot for it though.
Depends on its stickiness of the car version.

You could get everything from here :

I am at the painting stage of my cab, but I also wanted to start on the control panel and build the PC, so I primed the Control board and brushed one coat of oil based satin black on it, I am not sure that type of paint will look good at all, what paint has anyone else used ?
At a later stage I may get artwork done up but at the moment just painting it all black.

    give us a look.
best paint is 2 part polyurethane on a white base coat but you'll need a spray gun for that.
or wrap the lot in vinyl,Id do the later and you can get your art work printed on the vinyl.
I'd budget 200e for a printed vinyl wrap

initially i rolled mine and it looked ****, even sanding between coats and about 5 coats. in the end i sanded down and got an air brush and compressor out of my brothers job, the difference was amazing, smooth finish. if you in anyway can get an airbrush go that route.

Usually the non-Satanic ones I think! Nobody wants a possessed arcade machine!!! :D

Ok here it is at the moment :o, I painted control board and started attaching the buttons, I had to do some slight repairs where the drill left some rough edges so it will be ready for completion this evening. I want to get the control board and PC talking to each other soon in case there are any issues.

As you can see no door or no marque, again I am not decided on the marquee yet so I just stuck in a bit of wood for now, I am thinking of ordering a Bubble Bobble artwork kit from "rockstarprint", but will have to wait for some cash.
The paint on the board actually came out ok so I am going to fill, sand, prime and paint the rest in the next while.

Clean looking CP. Two sticks I presume and a sensible number of buttons I see, nice. Once you get some scanline effects on that LCD and it should look fine too. Nice woodworking skills. :)

just going to update my own tread rather than a new one.

Cab has been 90% finished the last few months, I had to make space in the shed so its in the Kitchen since, I upgraded the monitor to a 24" via adverts so using the mame bezels as I couldn't decide on just one.

All I have to do now is get plexi or glass and I am done , well I should get a router and fit some t molding , I think I can manage that.

For the moment I need some help with the joysticks, the diagonal jump is really hit and miss, is there something I ma missing or something i can adjust to get it working. Streetfighter for example is terrible to play as the diagonal jump from both player one and two is maybe 1 in 5 .

    Any suggestions ?

Might be an obvious one but do you have there joystick gate set to 4 or 8 way?

4 and there are no diagonals.

Thanks, yeah I looked into that even took off the plate in case there was an obstruction, diagonal does work but just not as sensitive as you would want.

Change the wires from the iffy switch and move it to another switch and see if the fault moves then it's wiring issue, put 2 wires from another switch say kick to the iffy switch and see if the fault is there, then it's a switch, more then likely it a lazy switch

I had terrible trouble with a stick and some directions, turned out it was the dust cover sticking on a ridge on the CP, could be simplest thing that's causing a bother.
