Bottom Bracket Issue

    Ok I'm utterly stumped.

A Raleigh Viking mixte that I've picked up for a project appears to take according to Google a 68mm bb.

But I'm on my second English standard bb and the driveside threads refuse to engage.

If I turn the bike on its side and sit the BB in the Shell the non drive side axle only protrudes about halfway out.

Is an NI manufactured 80s/90s frame using a non standard thread (the old bb basically disintegrated when I opened it) or are the threads just beyond use?

i may not help you much but square tapers came in 3 standards:
bsa (british) leftside -right thread right side leftt thread 35mm
    french both right threads 35mm
    italian both right 36mm

if you have opposite threads then i would think maybe it got crossed in the past or (if it is steel frame and alu bb) it got seized?
i would first make sure ahat kind of standard it is and then maybe try to retap it gently?

Once the threads are cleaned you should be able to look at them and see if they are british or one of the others. Maybe put up pics and see does anyone notice anything odd.
