Writing songs/music

I currently play guitar, sing and write songs but guitar and it's chord progressions are starting to feel boring and it's difficult to not sound clique so I want to try something different.

I like a lot of Catfish and the Bottlemen, The Weekend, Foals and The 1975, and I've noticed The 1975 use synths yet still play instruments, how do they do it?

This is the route I want to go down but I don't know where to start.
I want to write music that is similar to those mentioned above as well as others like Years and Years, basically take them as inspiration and go from there but
    how do I get started?

(Apologies if this is in the wrong place, I'm fairly clueless about all this but it's something i want to get more into)
    Thanks.

Buy a magazine about electronic music. They'll have loads of stuff to sell you! But really, all you need is a computer with some music making software and a midi keyboard to get started.
