Regression Statistics - Residual Deviance related to Variance

I have some fitted models for a given topic, including the null model, which I suspect is the key to answering this question. This null model has a residual deviance of 14457 on 15 df and I am asked to calculate an estimate for the normal model variance. I can find no way of connecting the deviance/df to variance, however. I udnerstand that is can be used as a test statistic in some kind of hypothesis testing scenario but I haven't been able to find any concrete examples or work it out myself.

Can anyone help me out? I would greatly appreciate it.

    Thanks.
