Diesel estate for less than 3k

I was asked by as friend to look out for a car for him to use while he is home from Oz for a few months.

He is hoping to get:

Body: Estate
Fuel: Diesel ( he will be doing a lot of touring in Ireland and France so diesel is a must )
Engine size: 2.0 litre max
Price range: 2.5-3k
Needs to be reliable
Can be easily sold on when he decides to go back to Oz

Has anyone got any suggestions?

good point but rental isnt an option for him as he wants to head to europe in the car too and most rental companies wont allow you to leave the country.

Just rent a car here, and one in Europe. Not that great going in a RHD car to Europe.

Obviously he's open to cars with lots of miles on them, the reliability requirement is of course important but one must be realistic when buying a car for a few thousand and heading off in it..... things fail..... steering pumps, ABS modules, ECUs etc etc etc can all fail as cars get on in years a bit.

However there are option out there....

If genuine that last one is the best of the lot imo, for what he wants he should be looking at getting one less than his budget as he'll quite likely need to get it serviced, timing belt & w pump etc along with brake fluid and coolant change. Also set of fresh tyres if embarking on a lots of miles usage period.

If genuine that last A6 "Serviced including Timing belt kit at 206 k mi + alternator pulley +drivebelt + tentioner , coolant .
battery 1 year " along with Nct 10 /16
Tax 06/16 .......... ticks lots of boxes.

the other A6 mightn't be bad either, the more subdued alloy style can be reassuring

Same way as everyone else I'd imagine I'm pretty sure he never stopped his insurance wheb he left.

How do you get nct to 6/17 on an 02 reg
I thought early testing only gave you 12 months from date of test or do I have that wrong?

You can put it in 3 months early if it already has an nct. On passing it can get 15 months

Due in june 16 but you test and pass it in march 16 equals june 17

I checked this out on ncts and my reading was cars over 10 years got only 12 months from date of test regardless. I was obviously mistaken
