Wisdom teeth; why the week off?

I had two wisdom teeth taken out today. General anaesthetic was used. I was sent to sleep, and when I woke up later on, both teeth were taken out, and it was all stitched up.

I was given a week off work, and wondering why a week? Didn't ask the nurse, as I was still a bit groggy afterwards. I work on a helpdesk, and would be speaking all the time, if this makes a difference.

Shall be taking the week off, but more so wondering why I was given the entire week off? Shall be back in on the 13th to the surgeon, to take the stitches out, I think.

I think it's to do with the general anaesthetic which can have after effects a number of days after you've had it, even if you feel fine initially.

You will feel groggy for a day or two after a GA.
More importantly, most patients experience some discomfort and swelling following wisdom tooth removal... This swelling tends to peak at 3 days and then subside, most would not want to go to work during this time.
Also, some of the pain killers can make you feel drowsy and this may be dangerous depending on your type of work...
Also strenuous work may encourage bleeding....
Also we recommend a routine of regular medications, rinses and soft food and this can be hard to adhere to while at work....

    Lots of reasons really...
