Has anyone been to or could recommend Vietnam as a place to holiday with a family. I have 4 kids aged 15, 12, 8 & 5 and me and the wife would rather do something a bit different for a holiday. It would be about 10 days in country.

I would say they would all love it. We may a NZ family with 3 kids 14-8 and all were loving it.
Hanoi is a great city...they will love the bedlam. Ha Long bay cruise is a must. Hoi An for something a bit different with lovely beaches.
You could fly down Hanoi to Da Nang ( very close to Hoi An).

Would the train from Hanoi to Da Nang be worth doing? I always fancied the idea of a train trip through Vietnam. I would pay for the fancy train to get us a bit of comfort.

10 days in Vietnam isn't very long!
I'm not sure that an 8 & 5 yr old would appreciate it!
But if ye really wanted to go I would suggest definitely taking the overnight train.
    Hoi an is fab
Hanoi is a great city, totally different.
Ha long bay is fab, but if I did it again, I would take a boat out, stay on an island, & then go back. No need to stay on a boat IMO. It's lovely to look at & spend some time there, but there's no advantage to staying on a boat & more advantages to staying on an island. More to do, re hill walking etc. More places to stay & eat on an island.
And you see the same bay!

    Dao cat ba.
Or something like that, that's the island you can stay on, get a scenic tour out, see this bay.
Stay a day or so & walk to the highest point & then get a fast boat back.

I saw lots of people on my boat, jumping in & swimming in the bay.
I also saw all the boats dumping their rubbish/ sewage in the bay.
    There's not much sea movement.

Don't get me wrong, it is gorgeous, beautiful, I just didn't fancy swimming in the water!

That's how we went, left Hanoi about 9pm and arrived into Hue next morning. It wasn't that far from there to Da Nang and Hoi An, we got a car and driver to take us over the Hai Van pass....stunning. BE careful of your timescale, we had 3.5 weeks and it wasn't nearly enough !!!
