    Hi

Wondering has anyone got experience in the below issue.
Have hissing when accelerating lower gears in a volvo s60 (turbo) for the last 3 days. Its like a gush of air shooting through the car, another way to describe which may sound silly but how the movies portrayed electric cars of the future accelerating.
Today while accelerating it started to almost slip like a fan belt was loose.
Just trying to gauge what Im in for before I bring it to a garage if it will be a big cost and job.

    Any help appreciated!

Boost leak I'd imagine. If you drive the car on up through the gears does it go into limp mode?
Also is it petrol or diesel?

No I wouldnt say it goes limp although the accelerator kind of slipped today, not sure if you would call that limp.
    Its a petrol car.

Sounds more like the car hesitating on acceleration as opposed to slipping. And hissing is a tell tale symptom of boost leaks from either the boost pipes or the intercooler. Either way I doubt it'll be too dear of a fix. Diagnostics might tell ya more about the exact issue if any specific codes are present

Yep hesitating would be another way of describing it. Thanks for the heads up, might be getting to the bottom of this. Hopefully not too pricey!

What year is it? The brake servo's gave trouble on the S60 and S80 up to 05ish I think, maybe on later cars too. Starts out as a low hiss at times going away when pedals are pressed and gets progressivly worse till its loud and constant. The subframe and engine needs to be dropped about 6 inches to get it out because it sits on the firewall behind the block. On left hand drive cars its a minor enough job because its on the opposite side and not blocked by the engine.

Or it could be something else .......:)

EDIT: Having properly rear and not skimmed, I'd safely say its not the servo. :)

Limp mode is an actual mode on many cars, also known as limp home mode. When there is a problem with the engine the ecu won't allow the car go past maybe 2000 revs

Hmmm that is good to know, a kind of fail safe.

There is a big circlip on the turbo pipe that goes up an over the engine. It's right at the front when you open the bonnet. Pop the bonnet and get someone to rev the engine. If that's where the sound is coming from replace it. I had mine let go on the motorway at speed. Scared the **** out of me. €5 to fix.

Edit: may not even need a new one. A tighten with a screwdriver could be enough.

Check the rubber boot at the base of the steering column inside the car too. It will not explain the hesitation in the car but you will get a lot of hissing sounds if this boot is not sitting correctly. It is a bit of a pain to seat correctly and there is a bearing underneath it but when I noticed it out of place on my S60 it and fixed it, at least the stupid hissing noise stopped.
The hesitation however could be anything. MAF problems are common on pre 2005 cars especially. There is a great Volvo owners club website in the UK that you could look up (I'm on a mobile so don't have the link to hand).

Cheers stimpson. Will bear that in mind, dropping it over to the mechanic now.

Got back from the mechanic, he says it's an oil leak in the turbo. He is sending me to a specialist for reconditioning as he cant. Reckons it could be anywhere from 300 - 800 euro.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,055 ✭✭✭selectamatic

Had you noticed the car using oil prior to the visit to the mechanic? Did you have to top it up before between services?
Bad oil seals in a turbo cause issues alright but hissing isn't one of them, did he mention anything about boost leaks?

Checked the oil and it seems to be a milky consistency and off colour, not something I've seen before. Haven't topped it up between services. Never mentioned boost leaks.

This other guy will check it first before I spend any money but after that I may see another mechanic just in case, thanks.

So the second guy( recon expert) says its a hissing in the turbo in his opinion but cant guarantee it until he takes the turbo out which will cost me 200 euro, then if hes right will cost 600 euro altogether to fix with a recondition.
