Net 1 Limiting Broadband speeds...

    Does Net1 Limit Broadband speeds?

I'm testing my connection with speed test and get approx 3MB/s download with that test, however, if i attempt to download anything from legitimate services, Apple, Sony and other software from Avid, Adobe the speed seems capped at approx 280kb/s

I'm using their basic package, €35 per month.

The speed is not affected by the time of day. i realised this while working a nightshift and using the internet at 5 in the morning before sleep :)

I have contacted them but this was a year ago and i got fed up trying to convince them.

about two years ago was when i was last happy with the service and i was getting consistent speeds of 1mb/s download, which was fast enough for me.
There is no other Broadband provider in the area except if i go with a midband 3G router/service.

any thoughts or anyone else have similar experience?

Net 1 are cowboys that use low grade equipment, if you can use another provider I would do so..

    FYP with bold.

You're paying for 3MegaBIT. Thats 375kiloBYTES per second. That means you're receiving 2.24Mb of 3Mb, not unreasonable if there is overhead involved and other possible connections.

You're getting what you're paying for, you're just not paying for much.

My apologies. this is the correct info....

    I'm paying for Net1 Lite Up to 5Mb.s €35

    (that's from the website *http://www.net1.ie/packages-2016/)

My download speed hasn't been greater than 300kBps in over 12 months....

however when i try Speed Test:

You need to divide the Speedtest figure by 8 to get MB/s. To convert MB/s to KB/s, multiply by 1024.

    1.83Mb/s / 8 * 1024 = 234KB/s.

Going by their website, your package has a 15GB/week cap (=60GB/month), so I would suggest giving Meteor a try if you have no luck getting Net1 to improve your speed. Pick up a prepay SIM (they'll send one free by post), put it in your phone or an unused 3G capable phone, send the text to select the €10 7.5GB simplicity plan and load €10 to activate it. Find a spot with a good 3G signal to lay the phone, enable tethering on the phone and connect your laptop, then try some download and speed tests such as during the evening or whenever you typically go online.

If it works well, their 50GB Bill Pay mobile broadband would be worth considering which is €30/month and provides 55GB/month for the first six months which also matches its 6 month contract length. I would also suggest going for their refurbished Huawei B315 router, which is €69 upfront and gives a stronger Wi-Fi signal and reception than the smaller MiFi units.

When I tried Meteor a while back, I typically got 8Mbps to 12Mbps (1MB/s to 1.5MB/s) in many areas I got a decent 3G signal and even hit 24Mbps (=3MB/s) in Ballybofey also on 3G.

Net1 are the only service I can get at home. There was a time when they were helpful and the service was reasonable, but in general it's nothing to write home about these days. I moved to their VoIP service when it started, and I've just moved back to Vodafone because it just didn't work - you couldn't call into the number, or hear anything anyone said. Their service is pretty bad too - rude, unhelpful, sarcastic responses on Twitter and Facebook.

On the subject of capping - they shut me down to 1Mbit a few weeks ago claiming I had exceeded my cap so now I have my router tracking every byte that goes in or out, just to be sure. I also regularly check my.net1.ie which displays random numbers rather than real usage - not reliable and certainly not enough to justifying downgrading a customer's service.

One point to note is that they are victims of the government's refusal to engage the WISP's and include them in their national plan for broadband. The WISP sector is definitely a critical part of the future, but they have now been put in the situation where they cannot risk investing in infrastructure for fear they'll just be shafted.

Anyway I'm looking forward to the FTTH service when it arrives - that'll be some upgrade!

Just so you are aware, there are very few consumer devices in the market that do this accurately.
