any ideas if the current Aldi powerbank is good as a back up for a Garmin Edge 810 ??
do you need an outfront mount to make it accessible?

when power is running low will connecting this interrupt the recording ?

    cheers

The cable is the important bit in terms of whether you can continue to use it.

Your getting ready for a 300km? Or for Celtic Knot 1000 ? Either way charging on the go is a pain, rain/mounting charger etc. There is a reason the etrex with AA batteries is popular on audax, with downside to. There seems to be no "perfect solution"

Does your cable enter at bottom of device. would you be able to get cable in when fitted to bike? See above post and photos

Aldi Charger would be fine I think, I've used a power bank bangood with twice the capacity for same price but a 5000mAh will do your one day needs fine

if it's like any of the garmins i have 500, 920, it'll go into a charging mode once you plug it in and won't be usable while charging

If you read the comments section on link, you'll see reference to cable type.

I remember googling it before, but too lazy now.(something about data pin ot other) The geeks on yacf.co.uk might be a good place to look

I know it works fine with 705, but it's a pain

The closest thing to a perfect solution are the gomadic battery extenders. They have particular models for each garmin model in case
the data and power pins need different modulation.

    http://www.amazon.com/Gomadic-Portable-Battery-designed-Garmin/dp/B00BDBXGAQ

Worked a treat on pbp last year, I routed a usb cable from the stem along the TT to the carradice behind the saddle. This required an extra adaptor but if you use a bar bag it'll fit straight in without the adpator or usb cable. Electrical tape along the joining sockets. One change of aa batterys was all that was required for the event.

A few of the lads use them as well and none have had issues.

The etrex are also getting good reports for battery life (aa up to 24 hours ) and not having any of that training partner crap that nobody ever uses.

You have to know the rules before you can break them;)

I second the Gomadic recommendations, mine has seen me through the Celtic Knot, various 400s and 600s and PBP. I have a top tube bag that holds the unit and my Garmin 500 is mounted on a barfly mount allowing access underneath. It's a good set up and has survived various wet weather audaxes.

As far as I can recall, the cable will connect when the Garmin is mounted on the bars or sideways on the stem.

As other have said charging on the move is a bit of a pain in wet conditions. When I'm on a long one, I usually do it when on a break and only charge on the move as a last resort. It's surprising how even just 10 mins charging over several stops will keep it topped up.

Also, turn off all alerts and back lights to preserve battery life and disable the phone pairing.

Do you happen to have an older Garmin 500 model? If so, I'd recommend using that in conjunction with your 810. It won't have the maps etc. but the battery will last a lot longer and it can act as a back up if things go pear shaped with the 810. The 500 will also go on for ages after the Low Battery warning comes on (up to 2 hours in my experience).

I use a Gomadic charger also. If you are buying an alternative model, do a bit of experimenting first on rides of no consequence such as recharging during a coffee break on a club or solo spin or on a commute. Better to find out if it resets the activity before being disappointed on a big ride.

Nameless Phil - I could have sworn your bike had a USB port?

Yes I do have a USB port as part of the dynamo hub. I don't use it to charge the Garmin 500 because it will cause the Garmin to go into charging mode. I do use it to keep my phone charged during daylight hours. At night it draws too much power to charge and light the way comfortably.

I also use the USB port to charge a small capacity power bank to keep my phone topped up if it's going to be wet later. This is more of an issue on multi-day rides, for anything less than 24 hours it's overkill.
