Broadband Privacy

My broadband provider (official phone number) rang me a few days ago to make me aware, as the account holder, of the large number of porn sites being visited using my broadband. I thought that there was no need for this and it was an invasion of privacy. It was me myself that was viewing the sites but it got me thinking that anyone using someone else's broadband and searching these sites could find themselves in an embarrassing situation. Have since heard of two more people who got a similar call from the same provider. Just a word of warning I suppose.

Do you live in a country with Sharia law or one where the church and state are one ??

If not then tell them to F*CK right off !!

That's well out of order and I'd be moving service providers just after I slammed the phone down on the current one. The idea they're looking over my shoulder is bad enough, but that they'd then pull some moral BS on top? GTFO.

There is a correct way of going about this, and it is, "We have evidence that usage patterns on your account are similar to patterns in cases in which we find that account security has been compromised. Do you mind if we go over your recent usage with you?" If your recent usage includes a lot of porn, then, oh well, it does. Did they just flat out say, "You're accessing a lot of porn on this account, I think you should know"?

I find that really hard to believe no ISP would cold call you saying something like that? April Fools maybe?

April Fools wasn't "a few days ago". I find it entirely plausible that such a thing could happen on any day, though I don't know the motives of the OP.

Think they meant the thread was an April Fools, not the phone call.

Yeah but it was posted today???? Just cus they said it happened a few days ago doesn't mean its impossible its not an april fools.

If it did actually happen id be ringing up to make a complaint to the company and potentially the data protection office as this is well out of order

Well done OP, looks like you got a few anyway. :D I like the approach, it's just subtle enough.

I spent most of my life working in various IT capacities in the American South. You better believe I think that sort of idiocy is something that a so-called customer service rep would feel obliged, out of a misplaced sense of upholding public morals or perhaps trying to score points with their deity, to do entirely on their own. It hasn't been that long since it would have been OK for a postman to have a quiet word with a mail recipient who appeared to be getting a lot of magazines in plain wrappers. Judging from what I see on the news, it might not be that far from happening again over there.

A few years back I did get a call from my previous broadband outfit accusing me of illegally downloading films. Which I genuinely wasn't. I was however downloading a lot of system updates and apparently these often large files fired up some flag that said I was a pirate. Fcuk off me hearties. Arrr.
