Road bike Helmet recommendation

    Hi,

Looking for a new road bike helmet in the <100 euro range. I don't need this to descend into the "value of a helmet discussion", plenty of threads for that. Also I don't need to look like I'm ready to be launched into outer space as I'm not a TT or Triathlon person. :D

There are a myriad of options out there but essentially I want something safe, aero-ish (not space launch ready) and light.

    cheers
    J

You cabn also get either a GIRO foray (with MIPS) for 95euro or the Savant (as above) but with MIPS for 108euro

Just read up on MIPS, sounds like I should try and get a MIPS version if possible.

Kask all the way as every other helmet looks like a mushroom on me.

Same here, have the Protone, had the Mojito before hand. Very comfy as well. fitzcycles in Stillorgan normally have the Mojito at better than Wiggle prices AFAIK

oddly, the Kask Mojito while cheaper than the protone and more expensive than the Rapido, it doesn't have any european or other safety certifications while the other 2 do. 122euro bit expensive for a helmet without safety certs!?

Sorry, mistype, it was meant to say 65euro (from wiggle).

My kask mojito has CE sticker on it, is this not the European safety certification? I would be a bit alarmed if I thought I bought an uncertified helmet.

It is the best fitting helmet I have owned, love it. But if it is not certified......

I found it odd that the other models of that helmet maker do publish their safety certification on wiggle but that model does not. So I looked at the questions and answers section and a wiggle person confirmed they have not certified it against the known standards.
Unfortunately the manufacturer have not had their helmets certified against the other helmet testing criteria I am afraid.
look under the q&a section on wiggle you'll find this.

I haven't checked but i'm guessing they're mistaken. I find it hard to believe it wouldn't be against the law to sell a safety device that doesn't meet minimum standards.

Kask sell quality helmets I have a vertigo helmet and it is the most comfortable lid I've ever owned although I prefer the look of the mojito.

You can see the CE marking on the label inside the helmet.

Buy from an Irish retailer (online on in-store), Wiggle or CRC and you pay Irish VAT (as they are required to be registered for VAT in Ireland and helmets are subject to VAT over here)

Buy from a UK retailer that is not VAT registered in Ireland (eg Evans or Slane Cycles) and you don't pay any VAT (as the UK applies a zero rate to helmets). Similarly if you buy in-store on NI there's no VAT to pay.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,368 ✭✭✭Daroxtar

Or if you live in someplace in the North like say for example, Parcelmotel in Newtownabbey, you are technically in the UK and don't pay the VAT there either.

    ;)

Helmets have different shape same as skull harness systems. Best way is just to put on your head and pick nicest looking, lighter, cheaper one in exactly this way :). Ive had Spesh Prevail, Kask Mojito but all of them found to feel somewhat strange. Best one for me is Giro Aeon and this one gets my recommendation.

    Cheers

Btw. I tought that every country in EU are subject of vat.

The UK have exeptions for a range of things for some reason. Helmets are one under safety equipment. There was a thread on this before, I think Ireland tried to do the same thing but were told it was not allowed under EU law. Possible something the UK done before or while joining the EU but my memory is hazy on this.

As for the KASK, as far as I know (and hands up if I am wrong) it has to meet the minimum safety requirements, at least in the UK, not sure about here. Mine had the safety stamp on the inside. To me though that means someone dropped it from their hands in a room and couldn't see a dent i.e. nothing.

Just checked, and my mojito has a CE sticker. Hard to see kask risking the consequences of putting the sticker on a product that hasn't reached the standard tbh.

I've a Uvex Supersonic and it's very light, (215g) comfortable and very neat. I also have a BBB Hawk which is also very light (225g) and also neat she doesn't make me look like a shroom.

Both have bug meshes which is one rigid stipulation I have when buying a helmet after getting stung on the scalp a few years ago when a wasp got in through an open vent and nearly killed me as I tried to get stopped and the get the helmet off.

Same happened to me, sort of, I was a bit luckier though. I thought a loose stone had hit me but I could feel my head getting itchy in one spot.

When I took the helmet off, a bee was stuck in there and by the looks of it was just a mm off stinging me.

I also have a BBB for the mesh bit at the front, I can't understand why all helmets don't include this feature. Something to think about OP.

I know it will get some stick here but I bought the Lidl one and use it in preference to my previous one which cost 4 times the price.

Cannot find anything wrong with it visually and its light and comfortable too. Wouldn't say the same about some of their other cycling gear but cannot find fault with the helmet.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 25,518 Mod ✭✭✭✭CramCycle

My first helmet in Dublin was forced on me by my aunt at a funeral. It was 1/10th the price of my current one. My new one is fractionally lighter and fractionally more comfy.

If you want one, and football whether you need one or not, Buy comfy and buy affordable.

Don't buy online. Get a comfy fit in your LBS and enjoy being on your bike.

You wouldn't be fat wrong with the test procedure but then the tests they carry out on the bike your sitting on aren't a while lot different either.

Back to the collar bomb safety helmet but done interesting info presumably a bit one sired but still

Parcel wizard are also out now, and for some people they have several advantages over parcel motel.

Irish helmets are zero rated only for kids up to and including 11.

Some other things may be zero rated on UK sites, like glucose products and protein.

These bars drop from £20.99 to £15.99 when you change the country from ireland to uk
    http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/high5-energy-bars-60g-x-25/rp-prod4937

They increased the price 31%, not just 23%

On the subject of helmets is price more linked to weight/looks/brand than safety? Looking around at the moment and this model on Amazon is hugely popular and conforms to CE EN 1078. Seems like a very good value if people reckon it'd be just as safe, but granted I couldn't try on in advance.

CE 1078 means absolutely nothing in the grand scheme of things. Price is linked to a range of things, including weight/looks/brand but they are not the only things.

If your only concern is a helmet, you could pick one of the ALDI or LIDL ones up for cheaper and you could try it on as well.

For 100 euro, you cannot get a better helmet imo. These are 220 euro in the republic. I just bought one to replace my old s-works - super super light, and super comfy. Once a helmet is on your head then the looks are irrelevant, and all helmets look pants anyway it could be argued. But over a long spin, lightness of helmet really becomes important and reduces neck strain and pain.

    +1 for the Kask

Recently smashed my mojito in a crash but I have just pulled the trigger on this one:

Beautiful looking helmet, I tried one on and it simply didn't suit my head/face shape and made me look stupid which was a pity as it was reduced to £50 in a LBS in Newcastle while I was there last summer.

If you have an accident and your helmet is damaged, you are able to return your damaged helmet to the Kask distributor (Velobrands LTD for the UK) who will supply you with a replacement model for 50% off RRP plus postage and packaging with a tracked next day courier service.

To benefit from the Kask Crash Replacement policy please email kask@velobrands.co.uk directly or simply return the damaged helmet to VeloBrands at the address below with your name, telephone number, email address and proof of original purchase.

They will contact you as soon as the helmet is received to take payment and ship the replacement.

    The address you need is:

    Velobrands Ltd
    Copplestone Mill
    Copplestone
    Crediton
    EX17 5NF

Not sure if they are the Irish distributors in case you bought it here, might be worth ringing the shop you bought it from to see who their distributor is, if it was local you might not have to pay the shipping cost.
