I'm surprised that companies don't have an alert procedure for scam emails - I've had many for Eircom/Eir but they don't want to know, Electric Ireland, Bank of Ireland and now the funniest, Irish water :p .WHO deals with Irish Water  Naturally, all these scams have 'strange' email addresses so that alerts me but a lot of people can get caught out nonetheless
    From : Irish Water <<snip>.....email......</snip>>
Subject : ALERT - Account Maintenance
    To : Irish Water <snip>.....email......</snip>

    Dear Customer,

Irish Water is performing the annual account maintenance procedure. Please login to your account and complete the requested actions. Once logged in you will be guided to the rest of the process.

Log into My Water now to complete the maintenance.

    View our helpful information booklet.

    Thank you

    Irish Water

'MY WATER' is certainly appropriate :p

What course of action could the companies take beyond the usual warnings? Its not like they can block people sending scam emails, at a certain point its up to the individual receiving the emails to exhibit some common sense

It was easy to spot the scams in the past. Nigerian Prince and all that.
But some of the newer ones could be hard to spot for someone who is not very internet aware. Some old people for example.

As long as people fall for these things then they will keep happening.

A scam from somebody pretending to be Irish Water wasn't really the best idea. I'm sure a lot of people would have binned it straight away, even if they thought it was real.

I'm doing a project on these phishing mails. Capri are you able to PM me by any chance?
