Selling car, cart cert & address details

    Hi guys,

Perhaps a weird question, but I'm concerned with my name and address details floating around on the registration cert when I sell a car to a motor dealer. Can I simply black out my name & address with a black marker? Would this be a problem when they are finally completing new owners details and sending off the cert?

    Thanks!

Yes, I'd say it will be a problem. But feel free to ring Shannon and ask.

thanks @biko, will certainly do and report back, although I'm almost 100% positive they will say it would be a problem but I wonder what would happen if they actually receive a cert to change the ownership with previous owner's details blacked out. It's not that the cert is damaged or anything and they don;t need these details since they have them anyway on the system. While I don't mind disclosing my address to the final buyer, I'm not confident giving the cert to a motor dealer as you never know where it's going to end up (from multiple tire kickers, to auction houses, etc, anyone will have access to your data). Furthermore, under Data Protection Legislation this is "personal data" and should not be made available to third parties.

@goochy, you failed to include trolling under your interests. But to answer your question, my personal information is my personal business.

Forgot to say no need to report back . Doubt if anyone else will be looking to do same thing !
This personal information business is ridiculous !

    Perhaps a weird question, ...
Don't trade in to a dealer who you wouldn't trust with your name and address!

    Blacked out windows? Check

Blacked out name and address? Check

    Black helicopter? Oh shit! :D

While I understand where you are coming from, you have no choice in the matter. If you 'black out' your details you will have defaced an official document, which afaik, is an offence.

I have worked in the motor industry (and been around cars from a young age) and have never seen such details 'blacked out'...be it the old style log books (which include every owners details from new) or the current reg certs which only show the last / current owner's details on same.

As a previous poster said, dont use a dealer you dont trust, or who isnt established in business for very long.

In today's world it is definately a good idea to limit the amount of people who have your personal details....however, in this case I'm afraid its a non-runner.

I can't see any dealer agreeing to allowing you to do that as the cert will then be destroyed and the car unsellable. It will be the dealers responsibility to honour any warranty for the car, not yours so your in the clear once the trade in goes through, I wouldn't worry about it.

If you are worrying about it best thing would be to bury the car in the foundations of some office block going up.
