Can anyone direct me to a description of what PRSI Class A and PRSI Class S covers? I know Class A is regular PAYE and has unemployment benefit and illness benefit but I would like to see a clear description of it and also of Class S.

Its very hard to find any information!

I think I remember you saying you were going contracting

If you are going down the class S route then you are probably being set up as a director of a limited company and will pay 4% PRSI

You will not be entitled to claim Job Seekers Benefit if you became unemployed, but could be assessed for Job Seekers Allowance.

Class A is normal PAYE employee PRSI, and as both the employer and employee you will pay 4% plus an additional 10% employers PRSI.

You will have full access to benefits should you need them.

    Does that make sense?

Another thing to be aware of, is that if you go down the class S route, you will lose some of your PAYE tax credits

Under Class S jobseekers benefit is only payable for 6 months right? and for me not until 2018 as I have been out of the country in recent years.

What about illness benefit? How long before that is means tested?

    Ahah I found something

    Class A Benefits

    Jobseekers Benefit
    Illness Benefit
    Maternity Benefit

    Guardians Payment (Contributory)
    State Pension (Contributory)

    Treatment Benefit
    Occupational Injuries Benefit
    Carers Benefit
*The State Pension (transition) will no longer be paid where a person reaches 65 on or after 1 January 2014.

    People within CLASS S:

Self-employed people such as farmers, certain company directors, people in business on their own account and certain people with income from investments, rents and maintenance.

No, you are not entitled to jobseekers benefit at all under class s.
    Nor illness benefit.

Most people I know contracting on the likes of class s have illness cover, mine for example kicks in after three days illness and guarantees me a certain income. It's essentially another form of insurance.
