Insulating sloping ceilings

I've an old house with sloping ceilings at the back, there's about 1m of ceiling above the eaves. There's a lathe and plaster ceiling which doesn't lend itself to installing insulation between the rafters internally, so ideally the slates would come off and do it that way. However, everyone I talked to wants to slap a foil backed board on the ceiling itself, something like the Xtratherm Thin-R product. Presumably once this has a vapour barrier this should be ok as the roof is still ventilated, however, I'm guessing once this goes up, it ain't coming off without a load of ceiling coming with it and presumably these are a complete no-no for the wall itself (300mm solid/rubble wall)?
