(I suppose that it's better to get clutch done also at same time.?)

Yep, it's better to get it done at the same time since the labour hours will be the same. There's no difference to a mechanic whether he puts back the new clutch or the old clutch so you might as well pay for a new one.

The main cost here is getting a mechanic to pull the gearbox off and then put it back on.

I suggest you let your mechanic pay for the flywheel/clutch kit/releaser because he will get it cheaper and you may struggle to find a mechanic who will use your parts and if you have issues he can always fob off the "poor quality of your parts".

Just make sure he puts in a reputable DMF/clutch brand like LuK or SACHS

cheers shietpilot. any recommendations for a mechanic to do this Dublin area? (south easier)
(I may know of a guy in Galway where I could drive down and get it done in same day but would be easier if I could drop if off I guess in Dublin).

No idea of the best place to get it done in Dublin to be honest. Someone who drives a VAG car might be able to guide you in the right direction to an indie who can do the job well!

I got an 05 Octavia DMF done in Dun Laoghaire a couple of years ago.
It was an Indie, they're not cheap but they've always been on the level with me and I trust them.
They gave me the option of putting back in another branded DMF or a cheaper SMF (Single). The risk with the SMF I think is that there's extra strain put on the gearbox?
Probably the same as was on it with the busted DMF...
I think it worked out as 1100 with the cheaper DMF including clutch replacement.

Well, my dad decided to go for a SMF conversion on his Corolla 2.0 D4D and about a year after the conversion the car started popping out of fifth gear. Eventually it was impossible to keep it in fifth gear and the teeth on the actual gear had been eaten.

I'm not sure if the SMF had anything to do with it but I wouldn't be surprised if it did!

The DMF should last MINIMUM 100,000 miles and some people can get them up to 160,000 miles and more so I don't see why not to go for a DMF which will be much smoother and refined. Unless you only do city driving which chews through the DMF, then there is no point going for the SMF.

No point in buying one off e-bay, different engine codes means you might end up buying the wrong clutch. As said above, let the mechanic source it for you, he has better chance of getting it right.

it's pretty simple to check the engine code and order the correct one, which I did.

SACHS dmf + clutch kit -> 320 euro

Got it installed for another 300 euro.
