    Have a 1.9 Touran with 6 months car tax left on the car looking to trade it in for a smaller so thought I might as well get some car tax back. Paid 673 for the year how much will I likely to get back?

    You can't get anything back in your situation.

    You can only get a refund if the tax is no longer valid - export or scrap.

    Cant you get it back if its not being used or have they changed the rules?

    No that was never the case. If the car isn't being used, you can declare the car off the road, so you do not need to tax it. Perhaps that is where the confusion lies. Even this process is no longer easy.

    You can get a refund in exceptional circumstances like being abroad or I'll or something. Wouldn't apply here though.

    I was told that if the car had over 6 months tax left you could claim it back.

    I think i was told that in the Tax office when i rang them. This was last year so my memory is a little fuzzy.

    Never heard of that one before! The only one I knew of was where the car was written off and scrapped with tax.

    Where you are able to claim back the tax, it must have a minimum of three months left:
    Refunds of motor tax
    It is possible in certain circumstances, to claim a refund of motor tax. Your application for a refund, should be made directly to you local motor tax office, on Form RF120 (pdf). Circumstances where you may claim a refund of motor tax include;

    The vehicle has been scrapped/destroyed or sent permanently out of the State,
    The vehicle has been stolen and has not been recovered by the owner,
    The vehicle has not been taken out or used in a public place at any time since the issue of the current disc,
    The owner of the vehicle has ceased, because of illness, injury or other physical disability, to use the vehicle,
    The owner of the vehicle has ceased, because of absence from the state for business or educational purposes, to use the vehicle,
    The owner of the vehicle has ceased, because of service overseas with the Defence Forces, to use the vehicle.
    Tax discs must be surrendered immediately as refunds are generally calculated from the first of the month following the surrender of the disc. A minimum of three unexpired whole calender months must be left on the disc when surrendered. Where a vehicle has been scrapped you will need a certificate of destruction issued by an End-of-Life Vehicle (ELV) Authorised Treatment Facility.

    My dad claimed back nearly a years back tax after a bad illness diagnostic which ruled him out of work for a year. Tax office were very helpful and a doctors letter was required but smooth sailing.
