My wife & elderly mother in law are planning to visit a relation in Manchester...wife thinking it might be best to get boat with mother in law not able for much walking in airport etc??.....although when she looks at boats there is no service to Liverpool from Dublin bar 6 hour boat, Belfast is not much better ...mother in law in louth?/...any thoughts...
The boat sounded fine as in they also would have their car over but logistically if mother in law got wheelchair in airport and get a Dublin-Manchester flight...be better I think??

Would you not get the boat to Holyhead and the drive from there is a little over 2 hours to Manchester

Personally I'd recommend the flight in a heartbeat. You can use OCS at the airport to provide wheelchair transport / assistance from checkin to the gate and it doesn't cost very much for the personal service your mother would receive. I am not too familiar with the setup at Manchester but I am sure they have similar setup. It should work out quite a bit cheaper overall than the boat and you would get to your destination significantly faster also.

I was under the impression from reading the page on this on the Dublin Airport site that this service is provided free of charge when you arrange it through your airline.

+1 Ryanair tried to offload the responsibility (to provide a wheelchair service) onto the airports but either a court or the UK CAA decided that it was the responsibility of the airline the passenger was booked with so in typical Ryanair fashion, they added 50c to all of their fares and said they would provide a 'free' wheelchair service.

I have had to book flights with assistance in the past, both for myself and mother-in-law (Different occasions. I had just had spinal surgery and she is elderly)

The service is free as long as it's booked in advance. They wheel you from the check-in right through to boarding. The MiL was actually taken on board via the catering lift on one flight. You also get to go past all the queues too. If there is limited mobility they may just assist with baggage as you walk on to the aircraft, if not it's a chair all the way. It was actually easier than when we took the MiL over on the ferry to Holyhead. When I arrived at DUB the guy who took me through was great craic. We were exchanging jokes all the way to the Arrival Hall.
