Counselling - can I claim my expenses?

    Hello!

I've been having counselling sessions for a while and I probably need many more, but I have to say it really helped me. There is just one problem: it's really expensive. I tried to claim the expenses (or at least a part of it) from my insurance (Laya), but they told me it's not covered and asked me to claim it directly from Revenue.

Has anyone here done this yet? If yes, what/how much can I expect (approximately) and do I need anything other than the receipts? (It's 35€/session and usually one session per week if that's important)

Why won't Laya cover it? Does it not count as day-to-day medical expenses?

It's a med 1 form that you need to fill out. Can claim back a % of money spent on health - GP, physio, prescription charges, counselling, etc - based on your tax credits and how much tax you pay. I THINK (but open to correction) it's around 20% of the value. There may also be an upper limit on the amount of sessions you claim for - but I may be confusing that with health insurance.

    Form here: http://www.revenue.ie/en/tax/it/forms/med1.pdf

You can claim back tax on Doctors fees, with no limit, at 20%, assuming that you paid tax on your income. You don't need anything apart from the receipts

Whether you can claim for counselling may depend on the qualifications of the counsellor. This leaflet has more explanation.
