which car to sell

Have a bit of savings built up and decided we want to buy a new car this summer. We have €16k and are willing to take a small car loan to top up if needed.

Have a very ordinary 2007 Ford Focus 1.4l petrol with no alloys or any real special features but it's never given one days trouble and only has 87000km on it as I don't drive too far in it.

We also have a 2007 Volkswagen Jetta TDI 1.9l diesel which was originally a better spec car but we have had to replace the turbo and the timing belt. It has 170000km too.

Which would you sell or which do you think we'd get the better price for? I'm leaning towards selling the Jetta as it has much higher mileage and seems prone to costing us more in the longterm but I'll admit I have no real knowledge at all of cars.

We wanted to go for the Hyundai Tucson and may wait til 162 to get it. Just after the petrol version as I'll be driving it and wouldn't do enough miles to justify diesel.

Would appreciate any advice on what you think we should do! Cheers

Will the older car be used much?
Would you be hanging onto the Tucson for a long time?

I'd say the Jetta will sell quicker than the Focus. Diesel VWs have a following in this country and a 9 year old Jetta with only 170,000 km would be appealing to a young lad looking for a cheaper Golf.

Plan would be to keep whatever we buy for around 10 years if possible. Whichever car is kept will be used in a 40min commute in traffic each way every day. Not really used much at weekends then we will probably upgrade this in 2/3 years if that makes sense?

What do you think we'd get for the Jetta or is it just a case of trying a few places? If it's the Tucson we're looking at will we only get max €4000 scrappage for it as a trade in or if it's worth more would they give more off the Tucson?

    Scrappage is gone now though.

Oh yea thanks, I won't be buying til summer so thought they might bring it in again. Or would I be better off trading in the Jetta while scrappage isn't available?

You'd be best off selling the Jetta, you'd easily get €4k, then aim for around €1000-1500 off the Tucson (they're not doing big discounts on them as they're a top seller, that's the case with the diesels anyhow. )

The petrol Tucson is basic spec though, and the engine isn't as peppy as some of the turbocharged petrol stuff like the Qashqai. I would guess that it would be robust though and maybe just what you need. Dealers won't be too enthusiastic about ordering you in one though :)
Maybe see if any dealer registers a petrol one as a demo for you if they've had it in stock too long as there should be a good discount.

You will be hard pushed to find a petrol Tucson and most dealers will talk you into buying a diesel model as they can get them (eventually).

Regarding the Jetta, unless it's a bucket of crap I reckon you could get close to €4,500 privately for it no problem, as I said VW diesels go for good money and their usually is not shortage of suitors for them.

I wonder if any dealers have a petrol, or have one on allocation?

I think I remember Fitzpatrick's in Kildare had one at launch. None listed on carzone now. I know Kia are not even offering a petrol Sportage here. If the OP is set on petrol then the Qashqai is more plentiful, choice of spec is greater and better chance of reselling it too.

I seem to remember that dealers had ones for the launch that weren't Irish spec. someone mentioned that here.

    That was probably it so.
