French Drain in Narrow Yard?

I've an old house with a penetrating damp problem in one area, the problems are caused by:

    ground level higher outside
    ground slopes towards the house

I plan to excavate the rear and slope the ground away from the house. I was also thinking of installing a french drain, however the width of the garden is only 2m or so in this area. Is this too narrow for the french drain to be effective?
