FTTH Ducting

    Hi,
My parents are hopefully going to be getting FTTH at some point in the future.  They are actually 200 meters from a road with a blue line on it on the http://fibrerollout.ie/where-and-when/ for the rural scheme.  Though I appreciate that it will be some time before eir are doing any work in that area.

Anyway my parents plan on doing some work on the house this summer, digging up the driveway to put in an electrical cable for some external lighting, and I was hoping that I could put in some fiber ducting at the same time, in hopes that eir could use it when the time comes, and avoid any extra work on the house.  My parents actually own land right up to the part of the road where the blue line is, so if the blue line is accurate and the house wouldn't otherwise be served, then it wouldn't be too difficult to run the ducting the 200 meters all the way to the blue line.

I don't know if this is something that eir are open to, especially seeing the ducting wouldn't actualy be used until eir actually expand the rural scheme to that area, and I understand that eir messure the timeframe for that scheme in years.  I don't know much about it, to be honest, so perhaps it isn't even feasible.  But I thought it was worth asking, especially if the line ends before my parents house, and this is the difference between them getting fiber or being stuck on the 2Mbs DSL they currently have.

    Thanks for your time...

    Hi  Knasher,

Thanks for getting in touch :) :)

Thanks for offering however all fibre to the home works would be carried out using eir infrastructure. We would also be unable to advise the planned cable route until works begin on this however we do appreciate your offer.

    Hi Pamela, Knasher,

I am in a very similar situation although it seems the work has already begun as indicated from http://fibrerollout.ie/where-and-when/, also the cabling guys http://knnetworkservices.com were up on the poles around our house.

I understand that the FTTH is on eir infrastructure but what options do we have?

Do we contact http://knnetworkservices.com, contact eircom or someone else.
The ESB for example have a great model to enable electricity to remote locations and have a process to engage with them to enable it. They give advice on ducting, layout what's needed etc.
    https://www.esb.ie/esbnetworks/en/domestic-customers/restoring_a_connection.jsp

The distance I have from the end of the blue line is 340m. Looking for answers like Knasher, do i need to dig a ducting trench, can the existing poles to the house be used to have the fibre cable alongside the telephone copper cable?

    Regards
    Sean

A site survey would be required seanok and then once works commence all works will be carried out by eir. If further works are required on your property you will be notified.

This would be completed by our technical team seanok , as the FTTH service is a planned upgrade of our service all works and requests are submitted and completed internally.

    What area are you in?

If eir(or KNN) turn up to an install and there is a significant run on private property they will tell the owner to complete the works and return when they are complete. You are correct to do this now OP.

Any plastic piping will do just fine running up the driveway. Keep it sealed so rodents don't get in and ensure the turn radius is sufficient (you can google for the GPON specs) so that it'll be viable. KNN will blow a sub duct then the fiber itself as needed. A manhole at the gate/entrance and outside the external wall would be good too.
