    Hey guys.

Long story short was driving on provisionals for 2 years about 5 years ago before going abroad. Now I'm home and I want to get going again. Was wondering if anyone knew what the procedure is for renewing a provisional after all this time? Is it just a case of booking test and going into MTO with all relelvant forms or will I need to redo Theory test/medical test?

    Cheers,

    Paul

you mention 5 years - this is the key here as the answer depends on whether your old provisional has expired by more or less than 5 years:

If less than 5 years, you can get a renewal. You wont have to do the Driver Theory Test, the EDT probably wont apply (as long as your provisional has an issue date of before 4th April 2011), not sure about Eyesight and Medical only applies for those over a certain age or with some medical conditions.

If your old Provisional has expired by more than 5 years then you are essentially a new applicant for a Permit. You will have to do the Driver Theory Test, you will need need a new Eyesight report and the EDT will apply.

I rang them and it turns out it expired 5 yrs and 23 days ago.

I've been home 2 months. Gutted. EDT eugh.

On that note. Is it obligatory to take 12 lessons now? Im a bit out of touch. The fact that I did some before counts for nothing?

Or can you 'go it alone' so to speak. Wow an extra 350 quid.

if your first license was issued after April 2011 (or has expired more than 5 years - see above) then you must complete the mandatory 12 lessons (EDT) before you can apply for your test

Actually, you can apply for a test (you may need a test booking to renew you third or subsequent permits) but you won't be issued a test date until the EDT lessons have been completed.

The medical is only applicable to those with certain medical conditions or over a certain age, otherwise you don't need it. But if you do need it, then a gp visit will probably be required.

Read the form carefully as there are a couple of exceptions on the form but basically, if you answer yes to any of the driver fitness question or are over 70 then you need a D501 medical report. It doesn't necessarily have to be a GP as a consultant may also complete it as long as they can provide a stamp and/ or MCRN number.
