'A car big enough to go to France in'

The aul lad wants to change his car. Recently decided to buy a new car and retire the diesel family wagon. He's a 06 C5 1.6hdi right now and it's never given much trouble but it's put up north of 225k miles and its possibly time to move on.

Any suggestions?

As the title, some sensible family thing but it would help if it was a little 'different' (ie. not the avensis or the Octavia I've been told)

Saloon or estate.

Diesel is a preference as it will cover a lot of miles.

Nothing beyond 2-2.2l on the old tax system. He hates paying tax.

Budget of 6-8k.

Could buy cash and sell privately.

I'm scratching my head here. It's hard to find a diesel car less than 100k miles these days.

I'd my eye on Volvo V50s or Mondeos but it's hard to find a nice one.

Can't see the mondeo being any less ordinary than an avensis or Octavia.

He just doesn't like the Avensis as his dad has one and he's already had three Octavias/Passats

I like that Renault. Did the fluence not replace the Laguna a few years before that? Or did they make both.

Fluence replaced the Megane saloon. Laguna was totally different

On the road for 8k with a little haggling. The mileage also seems to check out too She's a lot of car for the money. Was thinking about it myself..

I'd say it would be fairly painful for that 1.6 litre engine to try and lug that big body, people and luggage to France.

It's a big car for the engine, but I'm sure they have it geared right for its size. Wouldnt be the fastest car on the road, but would definitely get you there and back and in relative comfort.

I have one of these in hatchback. It's roomy and comfortable, and the 2.0 is well able to lug it around. Never been to France in it, but I think I'd enjoy it.

Just an update. He got a 2.0Hdi C5 Tourer. He'll be happy for a while now. It's a nice wagon. English import, Full dealer SH.
