ok long story short , been suffering with back problems over the years , nothing a session or 2 with a chiropractor didnt sort , but in jan i woke up one morning and just dropped back into the bed in extreme pain , bum muscle on the left side went into spasm , had to get a gp to the house to give me a diaffeine injection into my ass , was prescribed , tylex , vimovo , valium , but the tylex gave me fierce constipation etc

anyway it got a tad bit better where i could walk ( all be it with a limp ) as back on left side still sore , but was using nurofen and panadol extra to get me through , went to get an mri and turns out ive a large herniation on L5-S1 disc , i was given 2 options by Dr Ashley Poynton in the mater private , epidural nerve blocker or the op , i've chosen the op and will have it done wed 13th april , just wondering has anybody had this done , how you feel right after it ? and how is the mater private ?

    cheers

Had this done twice successfully, the second time with poynton. My only issue is the post op strength work, it was left completely up to me both times, in fact the 1st time (2001) the surgeon told me i didn't need to do anything  'just go back to living normally'. It was great for the 1st 2 years, the pain relief was instant but i relapsed.

Again with Poynton, its completely up to you to strengthen your back for months afterwards and to sustain that, i hadn't the discipline to do this :(

I relapsed again and now have likely permanent nerve damage resulting in some loss of power in my foot.

Anyway, long story short, poynton is supposedly the best in the business and I wouldn't think twice about getting it done if you are in enough pain & discomfort but just learn from my mistakes

I've had surgery with Mr. Poynton too, l4-s1 fusion. Super surgeon. Can't speak highly enough of him. Nursing care in Mater Private was excellent. Would agree however that after you leave the hospital, things are very much up to yourself. Physio will give you exercises before you leave and you get a follow-up appointment when you return to meet Mr. Poynton for six week review. All worked out great for me to be honest, was flying after the surgery (once the first few days had elapsed obviously).
Things did go awry after about eight months- screws came loose necessitating a second surgery to remove them. Flew through it again though.
Mr. Poynton really is the best in the business. I wouldn't let anyone else touch my back!
Good luck with surgery. Do lots of walking afterwards!
