Routes out of the city - North side

I've recently moved house and I'm trying to find the best routes out of the city from the new house.

We've moved to Raheny, to date I've struggled to find a way around Malahide / Swords which is an absolute nightmare on the bike, traffic is ridiculous!

Anybody have any recommendations / better routes for getting out of the city?

For a commute or for a spin?

I sometimes go to Clontarf from work and go along Tara street, amien street & out along the coast road. There is traffic, yes, but cycle lane also.

If I was heading towards Swords I would go either out the N1, past Omni and straight, or out the Ballymun road and across the back of the airport.

In terms of spins out northside... Depends on distances. Skerries, Balbriggan, coastal road. Then in around the Naul and out towards Ashbourne. Some nice rolling hills.

I live along your first route in St Doolagh's and that is my favourite route to bypass the main roads and intersections.

+1 on Raam's second option. Once you get to Balheary Road, the whole of NCD opens up to you. With a bit of route planning, you can avoid the R132 and head north towards Stamullan or head more NW towards Garristown. Fantastic countryside out there especially at this time of year. Enjoy.

Going south side from swords I tend to use the coast road and if I'm looking for extra work a loop around how th while I'm at it.

Took route 1 out this morning - much more enjoyable than the coast road and the traffic in Portmarnock, Malahide & Swords!

Lots of roads to explore now around NCD

this is very relevant to my interests

i was out malahide direction last friday morning and it really can be pain in the hole traffic wise. i've previously found that once you can get across to the airport you're in fairly open country so heading across through coolock / artane and over the bridge across the M1 will get you to a decent cycle / bus lane on the swords road. then following the R108 by the runway gets you around to st margarets and the nice country roads that go with it.

i find then (especially on a nice day) that coming back through swords and along the coast from malahide and portmarnock as much more tolerable having had a good spin in the countryside

will definitely give these alternative routes to open countryside a bash
