    Hi,

My car was broken into today at 8PM in the underground parking near Smithfield area and the rear side window is completely broken.

I hold a third party Fire & theft Insurance from First Ireland and not sure on whether this can be claimed. Will check on this anyways.

In case it cant be claimed am looking for a cheaper option to fix it.Any suggestions on garages or repair shops.Any kind of suggestion would be helpful.

    Thanks in Advance.

Ah that's crap, hope you can store car safely until fixed.

You may have glass insurance or not, check your policy.
You can probably get a replacement window and replace it yourself. Or have a handy friend help.

Google local autoglass etc and get quotes.

Same thing happened to me, local scrapyard had a used window, brought it to a local indie to fit. Cost less than €50 overall.

    Most policies only cover windscreen.

That's real annoying as most are getting into even new cars using signal jammers and you wouldn't even know they had got in only for bits missing.

Scrap yard a good idea or triple a or auto glass etc.

Thank you for the responses.Scrapyard looks like a good option. Will check on that .

You can find a list of breakers here but start with a quote from autoglass and similar places. It may be cheaper than you think, and less work for you.

If you only have third party fire and theft you are very unlikely to have windscreen cover. Unless you requested it specifically and paid extra

    Wrong. They cover any window.

100% do. They just won't cover damage to frame or paint

A lot don't even give windscreen cover anymore and load policy heavily after a claim in some cases.

Where are you getting this from?? If you have comp cover you automatically have windscreen cover

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,813 ✭✭✭peteb2

And windscreen claims don't affect a no claims bonus unless you exceed your coverage

Not necessarily, it's an extra on my policy costs an extra €20 for it.

Do you have comprehensive cover? Are you with Liberty?

    A lot actually don't

Every quote I have received at renewal do.

I'd never get insurance again without windscreen cover . I don't know if I'm just unlucky but I've got through 4 screen s in around 10 years . one a back screen after a filing Cabernet removed incident .

Yea I have comprehensive and I'm not with Liberty, I'm with Axa through the AA. When I looked through the small print on my policy windscreen cover was €20. There's others as well like personal belongings etc

Unfortunately did not take the windscreen cover option so have no hopes .Was going through the scrapyard option and got a quote from summerhill Spares for a total of euro 80(45 for glass and 35 for manual labour to fit).

Is this a reasonable quote or can i look for more cheaper options .

It's pretty reasonable but you can get cheaper (maybe).
Check with autoglass and a few other glass specialists so you know the ballpark prices.
