I was thinking of getting a satellite receiver such as a dreambox or a zgemma. I currently have a sky hd box, but I live in an apartment where the tv comes through a communal dish that serves the whole apartment block. So would one of these satellite receivers still work through a communal satellite dish ?

The fact its a communal dish doesn't make a difference. The feeds from the dish are the same. What box you use is up to you.

However some communal units are controlled by sierra and companies that know who has an active sky sub and so can and will often remove the signal to the apartment however this is rare but I do personally know some places that have this system in place....but as I said it is rare.
