never got connecting flight before

I've seen some posts on connecting flights but usually they're asking if they have enough time between flights.

I'm flying on my own and have never done a connecting flight so I'm confused. I'm flying Dublin to Frankfurt and Frankfurt to Florence with Lufthansa. I booked the flights at the same time - I assume this means they're on the same ticket?

Anyway, how do you know if your baggage will go straight onto the next plane ot if you've to collect it? What happens when you get a connecting flight? Do you just go from one plane to another or are there security checks? I'm so confused.

Also if I miss one flight, do they put you in next flight at no cost?

How much time did you leave between the arrival and departure?

Hi syco, I'm not concerned about the time. I just want to know what the general procedures are and if my bags are checked through or not. I also want to know if i miss a flight do they just put me on the next one free of charge
I've three hours on the way over but only one hour on the way back (Not that concerned about the way back as I won't be alone).
The flights are all in the same terminals.

Both flights are with Lufthansa, so providing there is a minimum of about 1 hour between arrival and departure, your bags will be forwarded on to your final destination

Also is it the same carrier eg luftansa, if you booked through a travel agent ( or their web site) and said I wasn't to go to Florence from Dublin and they give you the option of going trough Frankfurt then they will make sure its a valid connection and for some reason you miss your connecting flight (because of a delay) they will then have to put you on the next flight or a hotel for the night if there isn't one.

Normally people are worried about getting a connection because these days they will get Ryanair to stanstead and book another flight separately to wherever. Three are booking TWO separate flights and its down to your self to make sure their is enough time.

I take it when you booked that you booked Dublin to Florence? Any stopovers should be included if you booked it all at once. All you will have to do is put your bags on in Dublin and pick them up in Florence. your bags will be put on your connecting flight. How long is your stopover? If you miss your flight they should put you on the next one at no extra cost. Unless it's your fault you missed it.

Edit. Just saw how long your stopover is.

Had the same question myself flying to Dallas from Dublin which involves a stopover in London it's all with British Airways so I guess it's the same as above? I don't have to worry about bags or anything. It's a 3 hour layover or so, so should be grand for everything, do you have to go through security again? Also is it all on the one ticket? Sorry for jumping in on the thread just didn't see the point of making another one the questions are similar.

Actually the only time I missed a connection was out of Florence:) that airport can have strong cross winds for some reason (being in a valley) resulting in my departing flight delayed for 4/5 hours but luckily it was straight thought ticket and the nice people in KLM put me up for the night in schipol. Gave me an overnight bag with a clean t-shirt toothpaste etc and a dinner voucher for the hotel they put us up in.

Yeah I just looked up Dublin to Florence and I got this flight with the stopover. Hopefully all goes well. I suppose I can ask these questions at the desk when I arrive. Thank you for your help

Yeah I think you might have to go through the metal detectors again but your cases should automatically go through unless they tell you otherwise.

Dublin to Florence yes you will have to go through immigration and security in Frankfurt as you are arriving into the Schengen zone from a non Schengen country.

Dublin to Dallas via London. In theory as Ireland and the UK share a common travel area you shouldn't have to re do security but given that you're flying to the US I wouldn't be so certain.

Going through security again isn't a big deal I just hope someone says something to me as I'll be lost if left to my own devices kind of thing

Your bags will be checked through to Florence.

If you miss your connection (very unlikely with 3 hours) Lufthansa will book you on the next available flight.

When you arrive in Frankfurt (Terminal 1) follow the connections signs. You will arrive at a non-Schengen 'B' gate. The Florence flight will depart from a Schengen 'A' gate. There is a transfer tunnel from the B gates to the A gates.

There is a transfer guide for Frankfurt Airport: http://www.frankfurt-airport.com/content/dam/airport/Dokumente/Informationsbrosch%C3%BCren/Sprachversionen/Englisch/Transfer%20Guide_en_Maerz2015.pdf/_jcr_content/renditions/original.media_file.download_attachment.file/Transfer%20Guide_en_Maerz2015.pdf

Probably obvious but FRA departure time is their local time not whats on your GMT watch right now,
also our clocks go forward 1 hour (at 1am) on the last Sunday in March into BST/DST.

Don't underestimate your own ability to follow simple directions. When you get off the plane in London, there will be Departures monitors all over the place, telling you where your next flight departs from. (It's possible they will be able to tell you that in Dublin, before you leave, but they may not.)

Once you know where you need to go, you just follow the numerous signs showing you how to get there. It's not hard. Just pay attention to them and you'll be fine. No one is going to take you by the hand and tell you where to go, but there are usually staff on hand, should you have any questions.

When I went DUB to SFO via LHR I just followed the transfer signs internally in the airport. You are shuttled from one terminal to another and go through screening again. Then onward to your destination and pick up bags at the end. It's was all booked together with eflights but flew with Aer Lingus and Virgin Atlantic. Going over Aer Lingus put me on an earlier flight due to Storm Imogen

just to point out IF you miss your connecting flight that's all booked on one ticket , the airline will put you on the next AVAILABLE flight - they won't bump confirmed passengers. So the next available flight with seats might be the next flight or it might be the next day.

You do have to go through security again in London en route to Dallas . So the no liquid rule over 100ml apply ...had to do it a couple of years ago going to Boston and saw people who had to leave duty free drink behind them , not sure if this rule applies still.

Best thing to do if you're any way concerned is ask them to explain it at the check in on the first flight.

They should print all your boarding cards and explain that your bag will go all the way through.

When you get off your first flight there is generally big signs that point to "Connecting flights", but if not keep an eye out for your flight number on the monitors (by checking your boarding pass).

Basically Airports are designed so you're sort of naturally always going in the right direction once you look at the signs.

All you need do is wait at the departure gate for the next flight!

If a flight is delayed and you've to get the next one you might even have someone waiting on arrival with your new boarding pass, and your bags will have been transferred to that flight too.

    Best of luck!

We missed our Cork connection at Amsterdam a couple of weeks ago,,, no problem, just went to the KLM transfer desk, they stuck us on a flight to Heathrow and another to Cork, we home at 3.30 instead of 10.30, a five hour delay. Also if you are changing terminals at LHR you will have to go through security again.
