Peugeot Partner let out a bang and won't start

My brother was just about to reverse his van into his drive when he heard a bang and the engine cut out. It's a 1.9d straight diesel 2001 model.
I've checked the timing belt and that's all there and intact. It's turning over fine but no smoke so I cracked open an injector and no fuel leaked out while it was turning over. I don't think there's an in tank diesel pump so I think the injector pump is the problem. What's the best way to check if it is the injector pump? Or is there something else it could be?

Are you sure the timing belt is turning ive see them to strip the teeth off at the crank pulley.

Yes. All the teeth are still there too judging on where I can see it on the cam and injector pump pulleys

Has it thrown a rod out.... This happened to my Corolla with the same engine.

Are you sure it isn't the pump if it isn't a rod? The pumps on those are fairly crap at best

Edit: I'm fairly blind I didn't read your post fully. No diesel at the injector when turning over means its either airlocked (low diesel) or pump has had it. They have a vane pump, no in tank sender. Have you tried all injectors?

Thanks for that. Yeah I checked all injectors and there's plenty diesel in the tank. I also checked that the diesel was getting as far as the pump. Can you get these pumps refurbished or am I better of buying new?

If there is no misting when a line is cracked while cranking, take the pump to be refurbished. Chances are a second hand one will have the same problem or other niggly issues.

There are plenty of people that rebuild and refurbish pumps around the country. I can vouch for whom I know in this neck of the woods, which may be nowhere near you though! :o

So before I toke it all apart I got a mate who is a mechanic to look at it. He checked a solenoid on the front of the pump and found that was not getting 12v like it should which explained why the pump wasnt working! Then he narrowed the problem down to the crank sensor which was 25 quid to replace! Happy days!
