Drivers for console type game controller?

Recently I bought a wireless USB game controller from Ebay to enable me to play games that are hard to play with a keyboard and mouse.

    It's this one:

    www.amazon.co.uk/CSL-including-Vibration-controller-compatible/dp/B01AXY096C/qid=1458921627

While I am really happy with the quality of the gamepad, I was surprised not all games pick up the controller. It looks like this is emulating a PS3 controller.

It works perfectly in Broforce but in Batman Arkham Asylum it isn't recognised.
In my innocense I thought any controller would do, maybe some USB drivers.

Is there a way I can use this controller in any game that use console type controllers? I else I would have to buy controllers for each platform and especially XBOX has ridiculous prices for controllers.

It's not much to do with drivers, it's more to do with if it supports XInput or not. Older (a lot older) games were DirectInput, now most games ship with XInput to match up with 360 and Xbox One controllers. It's also why the Steam Controller has the same button layout as an Xbox pad, to ensure the max compatibility. Some newer games support the DualShock 4 as well (MGSV, Mad Max, Arkham Knight and Black Ops III among others), but it's a nice bonus rather than something to be expected.

If you use a controller a lot, best to bite the bullet and get a 360 or One controller. Maybe a Steam Controller, but that's more fiddly (some people like that, including me). Xbox controllers really are plug and play on PC.

I was blown away when I got a cheap pad and discovered that it is a nightmare to make them work properly. How on Earth are they not just plug and play and you can map controls to whatever the game needs? Amazing.

Thanks for the info, I think I will buy an xbox controller too, even if that probably sets me back another 25 euro. Specially painful when I just bought 2 PS controllers.
That Steam controller looks really good and probably is the best for compatibility but 55 euro is too much.

So there is no program out there that makes a PS controller look like an Xbox controller automatically?

There's a few, actually. Try the DualShock 4 page on PC Gaming Wiki.

You will still get Xbox button prompts, but most games should work, with some tweaks.

It is easier to just get a 360/XB1 controller - wired or wireless, particularly 360 ones shouldn't be too expensive, though wireless requires an adapator (3rd party ones are about €10 and work fine). The majority of AAA games over the past few years work out of the box with it, no tweaking required.
