Bladed spokes - Mavic Ksyrium Elite wheelset

I notice that the surface / part surface on some of the blades is a little rough to the touch on some of the blades - it's as if paint wasn't applied evenly or uniformly or possibly corrosion beginning to impact from the inside out. Obviously my concern is based on the possibility of rust or corrosion beginning to impact.

Anyone have any ideas or suggestions. Thanks in advance.

I have a similar issues with the spokes on my cosmic elites, they are all rough to touch with a kind of whiteish discolouration on them.

The grit they put on the roads when frost/ice is forecast is corrosive and eats into Aluminium. Have you been riding these wheels during the winter? Do you clean the spokes?... if not, then it could be corrosion. its only surface corrosion though and I wouldn't be overly concerned.

Thanks for that information 07Lapierre - these wheels have not ever been used during the winter and as far as I can recall have not been used on wet surfaces either. The blades have been cleaned regularly, waxed and polished on a reasonably regular basis also. If it is corrosion or rust, it certainly is not due to lack of care and maintenance. It appears from your response that the material is aluminium, which I wasn't sure of - do you know if they are spray painted or is it a natural finish? Thanks again.

Not sure... I assumed they were painted.

The bladed spokes on the Ksyrium Elites are steel -(http://www.mavic.com/wheels-road-triathlon-ksyrium-elite). I was hoping they had a very good paint job as I have just bought a pair. My Aksiums lasted pretty well with very little care but I have noticed some rust on the rear spokes. The other problem I have heard of is the nipples seizing onto the spokes or rims and loosening/tightening them a fraction from time to time was recommended to avoid this.

I've had similar issues with Aksium and Ksyrium Equipe wheels in the past. The problem is the spokes are not stainless steel. I have the silver Ksyrium Elites which have stainless steel spokes and have never given any problems like those mentioned. The same goes for the 6800 Ultegra wheelset which are some of the best selling wheels on the big bike sites. I picked up a pair last year.
