    So there I was zipping down the Wicklow gap yesterday when I heard this noise (as per this video 20 secs of so in) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lVNeT9xvGL0. I was sure it was coming from the front wheel. There is not a lot of mileage on these wheels (vintage is 2013) and I have never had to do anything with them (service wise). So off I trot to google it and youtube it and me gets even more confused. So boardsies please help. If its a fairly simple job I would attempt it myself. Cheers, Luxy

    It's the nylon bushing inside the freewheel. A drop of oil will sort it. Do you know how to remove the freewheel?

    Do you have:
    Two 5mm Allen keys?
    A chain whip?
    Lock nut removal tool?

    Remove the wheel skewer
    Remove the cassette
    Put Allen key in non-drive side.
    Use other 5mm to unscrew the drive side.
    You should then be able to just pull the freewheel body off the axle.
    Clean with a cloth and put a drop of oil on your finger and rub the nylon bushing on the freewheel body that you have just removed.
    Re assemble and job done!

    cheers, does it matter thats its the front wheel? there is a locknut on each side, no allen key fitting?

    ??? No it sounds like the rear wheel to me!

    This very much sounds like the rear wheel; have had this problem myself twice- managed to fix it, but you do need the right tools. The advice above is spot on; BUT be careful when disassembling because there is a tiny washer that sits above the freehub that prevents the cassette from wedging itself to it; and the bushels and spring are tiny so don't do this outside or on a carpet in case they fall out. A bit of a clean, some grease and carefully put back together= no more whining/screaming

    To confirm its the rear wheel, the noise is only there when your not pedalling right? Noise goes as soon as you start pedalling.

    You could be right, between the wind noise maybe I misplaced the origin of the sound. Thanks for the extra info regarding the smaller parts. I will wait for daylight tomorrow to attempt it. Yes I was freewheeling although it went away fairly quickly as I was only 10k from the car at the time and it didn't happen again.

    Quick way to find out is it's coming from front or back is to swap out the front wheel with another. No noise then it coming from the front wheel alright. If the noise persists well the the rear is the problem.

    Ok, removed the cassette no problem. Took two 5mm keys but there is only a slot on the drive side of the wheel, there is no allen key slot on the non drive side? Help!

    Isn't the allen key slot sort of hidden inside the skewer slot? Push the allen key into the gap and see if you can get some purchase.

    I've had to do this same job with these wheels after they started howling and screaming when freewheeling. I remember there was some little trick to finding the allen slot, I think it is as described above.

    Also, mind those freewheel notch things! They are tiny and spring loaded. You don't want to see them bouncing off across the floor! Although if you are getting horrifying noises, the muck on them will probably hold them in place.

    i made some progress, so thanks for the online technical support. I figured out that the free hub comes off with the allen key and the cone spanner (17mm)both from the drive side only. there is no allen key slot on the non drive side (whatever vintage wheels I got I dunno). Got the free hub off and the pawls, however (disaster I know) there was a washer on the floor which I am not sure came away with the free hub. I cleaned everything up and re-installed the pawls etc. However I am not sure if the washer is needed? When I tighten everything up the free hub no longer spins freely(with and without the washer). I am very close to an LBS to rescue the situation.....help

    I think it's possible to put too much torque on the allen nut and that will stop the freewheel turning. The washer should go under the freehub on top of the axle.

    The 5mm key doesn't go through the end of the axel, a 4mm does with no purchase. I did get the free hub off by using a 17mm cone wrench on the drive side while holding the axel with a 5mm on the drive side though.

    right, I took the chance to get a deep clean done on the cassette, back of the free hub, spokes, the whole bike in fact. I put it all back together and noticed the wheel was spinning as freely as before, so I loosened off the 17mm nut a tad and tried again, seemed better. But my question is if its not all put back together perfectly how will I know?

    The nut should be tightened to 10nM, according to the manual I read a while ago.

    Check out this excellent step by step guide. There have been a couple of different versions of the Mavic freehub, hence the confusion about the allen keys, check the guide I linked to it sounds like it covers the type that you have, also the washer and where it goes is mentioned.

    By the way the screeching issue you have is not uncommon, a good clean of the freehub and drop of oil will sort it.
