Have you tried turning off your antivirus first. Or try it in safe mode?

Yes, both ,and no precursor events.
When I attempt restore in clean boot, on restart it flags fail to extract file:
    C:\Windows\assembly\NativeImages_v4.0.30319_64\ComSvConfig
    Error (0x80070005)
    SFC detects no issues.

If you have a Windows 7 disc try booting and repair and do a system restore from that point, it might work.

Running cmd chkdsk/f, reads C file system as Raw. Is this a clue?

I'm afraid 9 time out of 10 your hard drive has failed, it's in a raw state. Have a gander at the site below which will explain it more detail.

Opted for reinstall, all appears well. No diagnosis though.

Download and run crystal disk in link below to check on the state of your drive.
