French ATC strike - a question...

I hope I have put this in the right forum.

I was caught up in the ATC strike on Sunday in Spain, and my flight home was cancelled at the very last minute.

Anyway, it was Ryanair and they looked after us very well I have to say, despite having to queue for hours to get rebooked and hotels and so on. Got back last night eventually!

The question I have is this - who pays for the cost of this?

There were many RYR flights cancelled on Sunday at my airport and they had to accommodate hundreds and hundreds of people in hotels, provide grub, and taxis and re book etc. Which they did.

Who pays for this? Is there an EU compensation fund or insurance fund or something? I just wondered because it must have cost RYR hundreds of thousands of euro to sort the mess out as a result of the French ATC strike.

    Thanks.

As far as I'm aware the airline is liable for the costs of overnighting pax. In my case it was KLM I was dealing with who organised hotac and reroute to get to my destination.

    Thanks.

I only wondered because the issue was not caused by the airline.

Airlines must be raging when ATC cause this kind of expense for them if they are not compensated. But I suppose many other things can result in re routing, hotels etc, outside the airline control too.

It's an extremely costly business indeed

I assume any airline that uses French airspace either factors the distinct possibility of a strike into their budgets or has insurance to cover it.
