I'm a complete luddite when it comes to networking so any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm on SkyQ, everything was dandy until I decided to move the upstairs TV box downstairs to the Kitchen and I went from 50Mbits on the wifi to 1Mbit. No bother I though and I dusted off my Archer C8 and plugged it into the ethernet cable I have running between floors to be used as an access point.

Happydays it works grand in it's default setup. So all I need to do is switch the DHCP off to get it to act as a 'proper' access point right? As soon as I do that nada, can't connect to anything including the C8. What am I doing wrong, sorry for being so thick please feel free to link me to any primers, I'd love to learn a bit more about networking.
