Auction, trade in or reset old jewelery

    Hi there,

I'm just wondering if anyone could give me some advice on this.

I have a valuable ring (sapphire surrounded by 8 not small diamonds on gold band). I never wear it and I don't like it that much.

I've been given a ball-park figure on a trading it in at a couple of antique jewelers and they have kind of hinted that I would be best putting it in an auction (perhaps Adams).

I was also considering having the stones and metal redesigned into a new piece of jewelry.

Does anyone have an opinion on which option would be the best in terms of value? If I trade it in or auction it I will obviously be getting less than it's retail value and I would then be paying retail price for a "new" piece of antique jewelry - I would effectively be downgrading to a lesser piece unless I put some extra funds towards it. Alternatively if I have it refashioned I will have to pay for the labour and design.

Any advice from someone without a vested interest would be greatly appreciated.

No opinion, or vested interest, but Adams probably not going to be the best option unless extremely valuable.

Thanks Del Monte.... Can I just ask what is your interpretation of "extremely valuable"? 5 figures?

    mine's not worth 5 figures :-(

Ah no, Adams would sell items from hundreds to thousands. Why not request a valuation here: http://www.adams.ie/Departments/jewellery :)

However, both John Weldon and O'Reillys have more frequent jewellery sales.
