Most major news outlets reporting this now so it appears to be true.
Malik Taylor, the rapper known as Phife Dawg whose nimble, clever rhymes helped launch A Tribe Called Quest to both commercial and critical success, died Wednesday at the age of 45. Rolling Stone has confirmed the rapper's death, though an official statement has yet to be released.

This one is going to hit all hip hop fans hard, I mean ATQC are hip hop and Phife was such an important part of that group and rap in general. One of my own personal favourite rappers and one with an unmistakable voice and some unforgettable rhymes. RIP.

Press play on every Tribe/Phife song you see today, it's what I've been doing and it's incredible.

Perhaps the only good thing to come out of this desperate news is the steady stream of tributes I'm seeing all over my news feeds. Not only is it a fitting mark of respect for an all-time great but it's also exposing Tribe's music to previously uneducated people, people who will inevitably become fans of both Phife and ATCQ.

Me and a friend were talking about this recently and again today, who has a better discog than ATCQ?

I've loved all their albums and The Love Movement gets a really bad rap....it's excellent.

    Outkast maybe?

"You on point, Phife? All the time, Tip. "

RIP to the Five Foot Assassin.

Pumping out some Tribe all day in tribute. Probably his greatest verse:

For me only The Roots come close in terms of consistent quality of releases over an extended time period.

Could definitely make an argument for Outkast though and maybe the Beastie Boys.

Horrible news to wake up to this morning, always held out a bit of hope I'd get to see them live. One of the only classic groups I never got the chance to see!

    Nice tribute from Mac Miller

For consistency there are few that match it in my eyes Gangstarr and the Beatnuts would be two off the top of the dome.

Just got me thinking about all the Hip Hop greats who died way too f*cking soon...seems like a bloody curse across the genre. Excluding the obvious Biggie, Pac, Big L and Eazy E...you've the likes of Guru, Pun, Heavy D, Sean P, Pumpkinhead, Eyedea, Dilla, Nujabes, Pimp C, ODB, Jam Master Jay...and that's just the tip of the f*cking iceberg from the cream of the crop. It's scary and absolutely gutting.

There a lot of not household name artists too that have passed on,always had me wondering is there some kind of curse in the rap game.

A song/video from the album he was making has been released (now an EP :( ). It's ridiculously good.

I think 4 of the artists i listed were shot, there's your curse right there it's street music. So many talk about using hip hop as an escape but the old saying rings true you can take a man out of the bog but you can't take the bog out of a man, its sad that the driving force behind so much of the stuff we love is also the downfall of so much of the stuff we love.

Doesn't seem fair that the rap Gods could take Phife and Dilla away from us while other, far less worthy souls, continue to make 'music' and earn millions for it.

I know scot la rock was shot for trying to sort out a dispute over an ex girlfriend and charisma shot in a mugging incident, but yeah there is truth in that saying, scientifik and his girlfriend were found dead in his crashed car with a gun lying on the ground a bit away from the car,it's alleged he shot her and then himself before the car crashed.yousef from the nonce was found dying on the side of a highway, cause of death still unkown, but yeah a lot of them was a case of live by the gun,die by the gun.
