Just looking for advice on how to abide the rules this friday, i plan on limiting my food intake but unfortunately i have a really important marathon on the next day which has me feeling giving up.. :(

The obvious no no is no alcohol consumption, meat consumption ill stay away from fish too, any electronic device will not be used and plenty of bibilical readings!

I plan on eating just pasta without any sauce around 300g raw weight and milk, but the thing is that it would make me full, would this break the rule of abstaining from food ? :(

    Thanks

I can't help you on the rules of your particular denomination but (and I don't mean to be facetious) this Christian will be buying a 6 pack on Thursday.

You'll be fine if on Friday you abstain from meat (fish ok) and fast by having only one full meal and two smaller meals (not together equaling one full meal), and no snacking between them.

Feel free to carb-load all you like after midnight on Good Friday!

"For members of the Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal" (from the US Catholic Bishops)

To be honest, why are you giving yourself a hard time about this? Do you really think that God is counting how many grammes of food you are eating? What God asks for is a humble and contrite heart. If you stay away from alcohol & meat, eat simple, wholesome, filling meals and don't add in extras such as dessert, snacks etc, then you are keeping the fast. The fast is meant to ensure that our thoughts are on God - not on the excesses of the world. While it is a penance, it's not a form of torture!

for me, fasting means NOT eating.

the idea of fasting meaning go ahead and eat three meals if you want is ..... weird.

at the end of the day if YOU wish to fast, that's between you and God

As others have already pointed out, my understanding is that you can have one fairly substantial meal (so with the marathon, you should probably have a pretty 'carb-heavy' meal) and two smaller ones. I believe there are some rules with regards the smaller ones but I'm not sure what they are - might be something like each small meal is to consist of two slices of bread or equivalent but I might be making that up. Genuinely not sure.

Again, as has been pointed out, I think adhering to the spirit of the fast is the main thing. I used to just drink water and eat nothing on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday but I don't know that there was any need for that really. Now I just try to stick to the guidelines already mentioned.

And I think God would appreciate your running the marathon, using the gifts He's given you and wouldn't want you to endanger yourself by going into it undernourished. I believe He does protect us but only if we don't knowingly do something stupid, expecting Him to save us anyway.

Well I gave blood today so I have been snacking as I need to and I had a substantial lunch. I will be going to the passion service but I think God and man are better served by having an extra pint of blood available to hospitals than me having my two collations only!
